What would you experts recommend for scoping a 358 " brush gun" ? Quality fixed powers seem to be getting hard to find

I put a 3.5x10 Leupold on my F model 358. A 3x9 gloss Leupold would have looked better. Weaver 14 and 19 bases, Burris signature Zee rings. An old Redfield 3x9 Widefield wouldn’t be bad either.

4x Leupold, 2.5x Leupold.

A used Leupold 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex reticle, like the shotgun scopes came with, would be high on my list or maybe even an old Weaver K3 with a post and cross-hair reticle that would stand out in lower light situations.

I only keep a few 99 scoped and ready to shoot and 3 or the 4 medium game hunting rifles had 2-7x33 Leupolds on them. The 22-250, 6-284, 257AI, 25-284, and 6.5-284 are intended for longer ranges and have higher magnification scopes installed on them.

Whatever you decide on make sure that it has enough eye relief as I recall that 358 Brushguns come back at you with some authority.

Can't give better advice than this.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My 358 Brush Gun currently wears a Leupold 2-7. I put it on about 5 (?) years ago, prior to that, it had a Weaver K4W for quite a while and then a Bushnell Scopechief 4X.

It would be hard to beat a Leupold 2.5x where I live.

Leupold Vari-x II 1 X 4 would be my choice

Or a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5.

I second the Leupold 1.5-5x20mm. I have a Leupold a Weaver V-3 on my 99 in 375 Win and a number of Leupold 1-4x20mm on my coyote calling combo guns 12ga/5.6x50R Mag, 12ga/22 Sav. Highpower and 16ga/16ga/6.5x58R Sauer. Hard to beat the Little Leupolds for fast target acquisition and reliability.

My choice would be a straight 4 or 6 power of your choice. I myself go with Leupolds. See them somewhat regularly on the free classifieds here.

Well I decided on a vx2, 2-7x33 that I bought used this week. This evening while mounting it , i ran into trouble. I'm using weaver bases and low rings, everything looks perfect but after mounting it, the scope is sitting so crooked that, it's visible just by eyeballing it. Could the factory drilled and tapped holes really be they far out of whack? I've examined the bases and rings and everything looks fine. I'm almost certain that the holes are off. Has anyone seen this?

Unlikely the factory drilled holes are the issue.

There have been some issues reported with the weaver bases for 99's in the past although I have never encountered them myself. My money is on the bases being the problem.

Ditto. I bet Lightfoot has some insight.

Yes, lots of folks have reported problems with recently manufactured Weaver bases.

You can try reversing the front base. The rear can't be. Failing that you could get a 1 piece Leupold or Redfield.

I have a couple of the old Weaver bases left on hand.

Thanks . I'll have time to look at it again this evening

Installed a leupold 1 piece and low leupold rings. Shot it at 25 yards off the porch this afternoon. Had it dead nuts on at 25 in 4 shots. Will sight it in for real at 100 this weekend. The weaver mounts and rings look fine but they had to have been the culprits. Thanks.

I have a Lyman All-American 2.5X (post reticle) on my Savage 99
