Taken near Newcastle, Wy., by David Royal with a Savage 99K 300 Savage, Lightfoot mount and Leupold Vari-X III 2 1/2x 8 scope on October 3, 2020. Load is 150 Nosler BT, 40 grains IMR4895. Shot in fairly light brush across an arroyo. We can usually see critters quite a ways off in brush due to the "uneven" terrain.


I tried to find closeup pics of the rifle from a few months ago but search says I don't exist. Can anyone help? Doing it over.

Tim was with me or I was with him. He set the hunt up. He brought his 99F in 308 but it was shooting to the left and he didn't want to try drifting the rear sight without the proper tools. He used a bolt gun in 7mm-08 on his deer.
He is coming back next year and I'm thinking about it. Our group had 100% success in three days. I was the last one to fill my tag on the third day. I passed on some smaller deer day one and day two.

David, so glad to see the great results with the K and the engraved mount!

I would have drifted the front sight to correct the windage issue. I forgot people still actually hunt with open sights.

The 99K is really accurate. A lot of guys here were really interested in it.
I don't know why he didn't fix it. He may not have brought enough ammo. He hunted with a 7mm-08 and said something about only having a few rounds left after we shot at some prairie dogs so he may not have brought much 308 either.
We're headed home shortly and should get there late afternoon. I'm ready to get to work on the new book.

Not as nice as David's, but I did get a chance to fill the freezer this weekend on antlerless rifle hunt.

Used a 99 EG in 358 Win, circa 1957, with a Leupold M8 6X. Hornady factory 200 grain at 110 yards. Missed my spot by 3/4"-1" but she didn't make it 20 feet.
The knife was made by a former customer of mine around 30 years ago. Finally started using it the last few years. She will eat well. I did score another doe the next morning, but the 99 didn't get used on that one.

Can't wait to see more pictures as the season progresses. Thanks to David for getting us started.

Well the bucks weren't moving much at our place in north central NE, so I shot this big old doe. Savage 99F in 300 Savage, circa 1957. Winchester 180 grain silvertips, topped with a Leupold M8 6x. This is my go to rifle. This and the 99EG in 358 were purchased from the same guy. My two favorites. 60 yards. DRT.

Old stock factory Winchester 180 grain silvertip ammo. I kind of hoard that stuff. At the distances I normally shoot. 60 and under. Most don't go far. I have used this load twice at 225 yards. Doe was one shot and a decent buck took a second shot. It is like anything else, put it where it is supposed to go and it works.

Nice one Jim. I like those big Silvertips too. I bought 10 boxes of 190's in 303 for my 99F. Got them from my old buddy out there in Oregon, so I have something to shoot a big bar with when I go to visit.

On a sadder note, my cousin has gone off the Covid 19 deep end. WV opens Monday, my buddy and I go up Friday and work on camp a little. Check our stands, wander around checking out the sign. This year my cousin's son is sleeping in a tent, can't come in the trailer. His Nephew has to drive up, 2 1/2 hours, Monday morning. One of my guys has had a stand on my cousins property since the 70's, he got the boot. I've only have 30 acres and the two stands on it cover the whole place. We're pretty bummed. maybe I can get one more stand in on my place where no one will be in any one else's line of fire, We'll see.

My guys went 3 for 3, my cousin went 1 of two. My Brother In Law took a nice 125 pound 7 pointer. He said there were 3 bucks together browsing. At first he only saw two, and he saw a deer lift it's head and it was a BIG 8 or better. Then it looked like it had reached it's head around almost to it's butt, and it looked smaller. After watching them he realized it was two nice deer standing head to tail, side by side. He said he watched them for an hour and the two big ones would not step apart. So, at 4:48, worrying about it getting dark, he shot the one closest, good clean heart shot. He said the other one was much bigger. I shot at 4:53 and he thought I got the big one. But, I got a typical 90 pound mountain spike. About 8AM John got the twin to my 90 pounder. John shot his with an AR in 450 Bushmaster, Erin got his with a Savage 111 in 270, and I used my old faithful 1950 R in 250. For those that have doubts about 100 GR Remington's not shooting straight. This gun loves them. Only about a 60 yard shot. Last week someone said if you shoot them in the ear, they will fall down. Well, I found out, if you shoot them in the left eye, they fall down too.

Took my 99 out on opening day Saturday killed a nice tree swinging on a nice buck chasing a doe and an hour and a half later shot a fat fork horn for the freezer. Never been a horn hunter but have kept the family in venison for the past 40 years. Tried a new bullet this year when I found a box of Speer 165 grain round nose new old stock. May be constructed a bit stout for white tail but they did the job. For the rut he still was carrying a lot of fat so been eating well. The classics may not be long range minute of angle but they damn sure are minute of deer. Forgot the details 99F in 308 wearing a Leopold 3x9. Haven't hunted this gun in 7 years but it still fits like a well worn pair of jeans and shoots where I am looking.

I've killed seven of them over the past three weeks. My freezer is now completely full. I have a couple of people that I know that I bring them to quartered out and in an ice chest. I can't bring myself to not utilize them unless they are in really poor shape or super stinky big boars. Even the big boars are good to eat if cared for properly. When my freezer is full and I don't have someone to take one I bone it out and I have a couple of crockpots I cook the meat down in until it falls apart and can be shredded. I feed that to my dogs. Makes a high quality dog food. Better than using them for coyote bait in my opinion.

All that being said they are a destructive non-native species. You cant kill enough of them to keep them in check. I have no problem with folks who kill them and let them lay.

Buzzards gotta eat, same as the worms.

Thanks Mohawk, I was just curios. I have no problem with people leaving them for the other critters to chew on either. I know hogs are a big problem but sometimes I wish I could shoot some for the freezer anytime I wanted. I know, I should be careful what I wish for.

I shot a 225 pound boar and he had no fat on him and was a little tough, maybe a little dry, but still good. The next year I shot a 150 pounder and it had a thick layer of fat, and was as good as any store bought pork. I made bar-b-que in the crock pot, then put a layer of pork chops on top of the bar-b-que and another layer of Sweet Baby Rays on top of the chops, let it simmer till done. The pot got wiped so clean I didn't have to wash it.

At long last my Savage 99 has taken another deer. The gun was my grandfather's, then my dad's until he died in 1988 when I was 14. My dad shot a 6-pointer that year, but died before the butcher was done with the processing. I hunted a little with it when I was young, but felt I needed to hunt with a scope and sling. Reluctant to drill it, I bought a used, scoped Remington 721 with which I hunted for 25 years. I'm very grateful to those on this site who showed me how I could modify the 99 without marring it permanently! The gun is a 99T with a Lightfoot mount, Leupold VX1 2-7x33 and Bayou Gun Sling. The deer is 7-points (5x2) and was taken in Fox Township of Sullivan County, PA. Hopefully the image link works...

David, your rifle has a significantly higher "cool factor". She shoots left handed and fell in love with this rifle when we bought it in 99 (I had the stock shortened an inch for her and the boys and re-blued it before i knew better). This is the first animal for her with it...finally. Load was 150g Accubond and 44g RL15 which chronographs 2650 in this rifle. Scope is a 3X Leupold.

The USAFA hunt is basically a 2 day private land guided hunt put on by the USFWS on the Academy. We scouted for 2 weeks prior and saw 5 deer that were significantly larger than this one but the Thurs before the Sat opening, the rut came to a screeching halt and the big deer we had been seeing on a daily basis vanished. This deer was right in that "should I shoot or wait" zone but given the change, the hunting pressure (14 other hunters), and it's still a really nice deer, she took it. She had already passed 4 other 4pt deer that AM. Like i said, she's happy so thats what matters.

Congrats to all of the Savage hunters and their fantastic successes. It's a warm feeling to see people confident enough to use rifles and cartridges that are every bit as capable as the newest fad stuff.

Newbie here-- things were very scarce in MIchigan's Upper Peninsula this year, so I counted myself lucky to drop this nice little 6 point. .300 Savage broadside at 40 yards-- dropped like a rock.

No trophy here, but a good addition to the freezer, and as always, a good experience!

The first pic is Brent Geistweidt, me, the 99K and the buck. I shot it on Brent's White Ghost Ranch. He's got a breeding program going there.
The 99K is a 300 Savage. The load is a Nosler partician, 40 grains 4895, WLR primer and new Winchester brass.
I'm almost finished photographing his 99's and will be headed back to the cold snowy North Country later today. Gotta get home for Christmas.

First kill with this 99 since I purchased it last year.

Finally found a deer to shoot at. I've been hunting all fall with the 35 Rem Chris built me and have seen plenty of deer but just have been unable to get my crosshairs settled on one. So I decided to sit on a hayfield last Monday evening and this fellow came out right at dark. Left the 35 home and opted for my Dad's 300 EG. First time I've hunted with it since he passed in September. No pictures of the gun. I guess we all know what a 300 EG looks like.

I just now visited this sub-forum for the first time, even though I have been a member here on the 'Fire for a few years. Can't believe I have missed out on all the great M99 content here.
Anyway, here's my AZ cow elk from 2020. M99E, born as a .308, but now wears a NOS Savage 99 .358 barrel I found on eBay (really!) in 2007. It shoots great and hits like a hammer. Old Leupold VX-II 1-4.

Nothing like spring bear in B.C.! I took this guy Friday morning with my 1899B that was built in 1907. It was my dad's rifle and he handed it down to me almost 3 years to the day before I took this bear. It's been my mission since then to find a bear with it and I couldn't be happier with the one I finally connected on. I was sitting in my tree stand Friday morning in a spot that is absolutely full of good bears when this fella showed up. This is one of two boars in the area that were on my hit list. The other one is still out there and I'll be looking for him this week. Hopefully this old rifle (and the shooter) have plenty of years left in it.

Went out this weekend for a deer hunt....that didn't work out so well. It didn't work out so well for these birds.

Our fall turkey allows any bird, hens or toms. Shot these two at 30 yards. Used my Stevens 9478 in 20 ga. 3" #5 ammo. This shotgun has the barrel cut to 20", fiber optic sight and Remchoked. Used an extra full turkey choke.

One shot got both. I know, I got lucky. Fun morning in the woods.
