If you hunt and shoot, is there a particular 303 model that you enjoy? What do you like about it?
I got a 99H this year and enjoyed hunting with it. It's a fun shooter but for targets I like one of my 1899A take downs. I'm not sure if it shoots better than any of the other 303s but I just really like them as rifles. The longer barrels seem better for longer shots. Although where I hunt a 70 yard shot I'd about the absolute maximum. I think my next one will be a 1899H, wanted to own one of those for a while.
Ok, I'll admit it. I like about anything chambered in 303 savage.
What about you? I'm sure you own more 303s than I do. What was the rifle you shot the shot that was seen around the world with?
I forgot, I have an 1899B that I put a stith mount and a 330 scope on. I had to shim the rear mount but it shoots great and is a hell of a lot of fun to shoot.
My .303 fave.
Kinda like picking a favorite whiskey. My 1926 303 F is so damm lite, easy handling and accurate, its my favorite today. Subject to change at any given moment.
My .303 fave.
That is a terrific deer
Can't say there's a particular one I enjoy more than the others.
They're all good....
Either of my 1895's shooting moderate handloads. It is just plain fun to shoot something that old and historic. I would never take either into the woods. I keep forgetting that I want to order some 190 grains just to give them a whirl.
I shoot 190 cast bullets in my .303's. In fact, that's the bullet that led to the demise of the one I posted above.

And demise him you did.
I killed an elk with my 303 SRC a few years ago. I guess it's my favorite.
Tried to post pics but image gallery says the file is too big. I'll again later. Posting later worked the last time it said the image was too big. I don't know how to shrink pics with the new computer.

Take thems shooting irons hunting. Back in 2014, I took my 303 1899 B (lettered Aug of 1899) out to let the air out of a decent freezer filler. My buddies at work said I was nuts to take a 115 year old gun out hunting. Well, to make a short story long, when it went back into the safe, it looked exactly how it looked when I took it out to go hunting.
it thanked me for the opportunity to do its intended job and not merely be a display item to be taken out of the safe 3 times a year to be cleaned and admired.Thats just my 3 cents worth.(inflation)
To remain true to OP query, my 1899 B could be my fav tomorrow.
Simple ..........99EG in 303!
I have a refinished takedown 99. 19" Barrel in .303 which appears to be NOS as it has a mirror finish bore and razor-sharp lands and fits extremely tight to the point you can't remove by hand, need a strap wrench. It also has a tang sight and a fold-down marbles rear sight. It has been professionally Drill & Tapped, the bolt has been engine turned, and the internals are shiny and spotless. This is the best handling and the smoothest 99 I own out of the bunch. Someone refinished this and blued it with care and left the factory marbles compass in the buttstock intact and in great working condition. I bought this exactly the way it is thinking it would become my go-to and I would not have to worry about harming collector value as it has been refinished. It has not become my go-to and won't due to other better options I now have. I don't shoot it much but I did start working up loads for it a few years back with FTX 160's.
If anyone interested, I would trade this rifle without the tang sight, dies, brass and a Williams QD scope mount with a quick change peep sight that uses the rear tang screws for a non-collector Savage 99 in .308.
My bubba'd-up SRC, wounded, but never caught the biggest buck I've ever seen in the woods, three years ago Thanksgiving morning.. still my favorite,..but I switched to a different bullet..
JeffG, gorgeous wood on that rifle.
My .303 fave.
have the same one, when I was hunting it was my favorite
Just seems the older ones call to me. 1900 1899B.

Nice. I love that big flat meplat. Shades of Elmer Keith. I never got into casting and am kinda old to start now. Of course, I guess I could find someone who casts and sells some once in a while and just order from them. That looks just like the jacketed ones for sale. Two feet long.
I might add that you may be the only person in captivity who produces a flat meplat 190 grain gas check in .308 caliber. Pretty rare company.
For the 303 Savage reloader, Barnes has recently added 30-30 load data to their web site for their Barnes Original 190 grain. I know many of us refer to 30-30 data when we are looking for 303 Savage load data. Some newer powders are listed. Here is a link; it;s on 2nd page.

+1. Smooth as butter.
An accurate 1895 RB with an ivory combo sight and a Lyman tang sight that shot 100yd groups under 1 1/2", once once a time, is the only 303 I have left in the Savage safe. Fifteen years later I don't know if I can hold that still anymore... Kept it for that very reason.
My 1895 round barrel, one of the last built by Marlin.
Why? I had it restored and it looks fantastic. Fun to shouder it and ponder how many times and where it has been shot in the past.

That was the first custom mold I designed and had Saeco make for me, almost 40 years ago now. I was young and dumb and consulted with Frank Marshall of the CBA for advice. I wanted a "woods thumper" cast bullet for the first Winchester 54 .30-30 I had back then and Frank was a big proponent of a 190 grain cast bullet in his .30-30 Savage 340 for bears over in the Blue Ridge. (He loaded his hunting ammo for that gun with a case full of old Surplus 4831, pretty much like H-4831 today. I have used 28.0 grains 3031 in .30-30 and .303 Savage for about 35 years now.) It turned out to be a darned accurate bullet in about every .30 rifle I've used it in. Most of my Springfields will cut cloverleafs with it. Out of a couple dozen .30 molds I have, that one would be the last to ever leave.
Thanks for the heads up and link, Keith. I still have yet to try any of those Barnes 190's. I'm afraid they'll out perform my 190 casts!!
What about you? I'm sure you own more 303s than I do. What was the rifle you shot the shot that was seen around the world with?
I don't own but a few 303's. I'm a 303 newby. The Shot Seen Round The World (did I ever show you guys this?
)
.....was a 99E.
I can think of a 99T and a 99 carbine. I believe this is a 303 iirc.
Don't think I own a long one in 303. I enjoy shooting the 303 alot.
Throw The Bambino a softball, why dontcha?
Been thinking a 1899A or B would be about right.
Any 99 in 303, or my F if I had to choose. Though lately I've been thinking about building a 303 on an old Stevens 44 1/2. That one quite possibly might become my favorite "Savage" 303 should it come to fruition. Now to find the action.
Roy,
My favorite 1895/1899/99 to hunt with is my 99H V1-2. It's not much to look at with it's "fruit wood" stock set and non-factory sling swivels, but it will make little tiny groups (Lyman 29 1/2) at any distance I'm likely to try to kill something. I can't hunt deer here in Ohio with it, but coyotes, pigs, groundhogs and feral dogs tread at their risk...
It's also the lightest Savage rifle I own, by a few ounces. Nothing but hills here. Not nearly as grand as yours, but just as steep!
Merry Christmas to all!
Doug
Easy choice, I think it's the only one I have now? Sorry if you've seen the pic before. This is the rifle that brought me to the campfire and had people calling me Larry Root in disguise, just because I joined on April Fools Day. Any way, it doesn't fool around. This shot was with 190 Silvertips.
Gnoahhh, does saeco still make that mold?
No, not the exact same mold. This was a custom job.
Ken Waters "Pet Loads" has some good loads, for most every savage caliber
I have 90%+ H Barrel bands in 303 & 30 30 and have never fired them. Great handling rifles. Be nice to have a 250 & 300 in similar condition. Can't have them all but sure is fun looking for them. GW
I'd settle for an 1899CD SR...
