I have been doing a bit of tinkering on a few takedowns, and made a new "to me" discovery. I took the metal takedown lock assembly off of some forearms and found the serial numbers and model were stamped on the side that butted against the forearm wood !!! 99F serial number and letter F, 99G serial number and letter G, 99K serial number and letter K. On my 2 99D rifles the one in 30-30 with the short barrel had the serial number and the letter R, the one in 300 with the longer barrel had the serial number with the letter S ????? so was there a early model R and S ????? grin another savage mystery!

Wondering how the 414 is coming?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: new 99 takedown info - 03/12/21
I've never removed the takedown hardware. Hmm.

What was on the front of the receiver on those 99D's? Where the model letter is usually stamped?

Rory, The front of the receivers are blank, where the models are stamped on later rifles. CTW, the 414 is at a halt!!! the 414 reamer didn't clean up the damaged chamber area. That barrel became a 410 that holds the forearm like the normal takedowns. Im looking for another heavy takedown barrel that isn't perfect so i can make the 414. I wont mess up a good takedown barrel.

What about on the F, G and K? Just trying to see if the letter stampings correlate to the receiver stamp.

You need a second computer out there, my man... grin

Are the grosbeaks back yet?
Posted By: ctw Re: new 99 takedown info - 03/12/21
Will it clean up a 303 chamber?
Posted By: Loggah Re: new 99 takedown info - 03/12/21
No grosbeaks yet. My takedowns go from 270,000 the next one is a K in 318,000 range. Starting with the K the receiver is marked and the front of the takedown metal is also marked i checked a couple higher s/n takedown models and they have both marks. When did the marking on the receiver front start?

I'm not sure we've ever pinned down an exact serial number range. Off the top of my head, I think 1925-1926? My combo kit that's beginning of 1924 (256,xxx) doesn't have a G on the front.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was around the 300,000 range?

My .300 99D, #2704XX, has an “S” stamped on the front of the frame.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: new 99 takedown info - 03/12/21
Aha... could be the 99D got a S for a model stamp on the receiver, like the 99R usually got an 8. Need more examples, something to watch for.

Wow , that's got to look pretty svelte and clean .

I know it was a utilitarian thing and not for aesthetics , but I never liked the jack screw auguring / jacking on the end of the schnabel .

Well its a bit of a heavy 410 barrel ,but i coudn't let it go to scrap. Im going to load up some 444 marlin shells as brass shotshells for it. It is still rifled but the wad protects the shot enough as it leaves the barrel, and it will shoot 410 slugs like a rifle. smile

As a single shot?

Will the 414 reamer clean up a 303 chamber?

Personally on the hunt for a take off 44 mag rifle barrel for experimentation. Anyone have one here collecting dust?
Posted By: Loggah Re: new 99 takedown info - 03/12/21
Chris, Yes as a single shot, basically i left the 303 cartridge guide and ejector and rotor alone and use the 410 barrel with that. I have a modified rotor and cartridge guide all set for the 414 when i get another donor barrel. The 303 chamber is loose for the first half inch of the 414 reamer maybe .010 ,it may work but would have a loose fitting chamber in first 1/3 of the 414 reamer.

Had a 1930 99G out, so took a look before I tucked it away.

Serial number and model. I'd have never found that.

Mine is a 1923 G, but has this H on it.

My HP22 from 1915 has and H and what looks like a J in addition to a full S/N that is over 700 lower than the receiver.

No idea what the H's are, too early to be a model letter. An inspector stamp?
Thanks for the pics. Brings to life the descriptions.

How rare are D's ? ,,,,,,,,Ive never heard anyone speak of a D ,,let alone knew they existed
Posted By: Calhoun Re: new 99 takedown info - 04/10/21
99D’s were the continuation of takedown 1899A SR’s, and those were never plentiful. I think they got less common when the 99G in all common cartridges became available in 1921. Only catalogued as the 99D from 1921 thru 1927.
