Watching an auction last night to try to look at a couple. Seller's market now. Here's some samples.

Code
Model	Cartridge Serial Notes Bid Price	With Juice
99EG	300 Savage 408645 $975.00	$1,150.50
99A	243 1102695 $1,100.00	$1,298.00
99F	358 1053548	postmil, cut checkered	$1,700.00	$2,006.00
99PE	308 1092750 $3,250.00	$3,835.00
99DL	300 Savage	1134968	pressed checkering $900.00	$1,062.00
99DL	243 A774407	pressed checkering	$1,025.00	$1,209.50
99EG	243 954146	wrong buttstock?	$1,350.00	$1,593.00
99F	358 1184209	postmil, cut checkered	$1,600.00	$1,888.00
99EG	250-3000 420160 $1,075.00	$1,268.50
99EG	250-3000 630966 $1,100.00	$1,298.00
99G	30-30 368279 $1,200.00	$1,416.00
99C	7mm08 D723636	cracked recoil pad	$2,200.00	$2,596.00
99G	303 369766	replaced rear sight $975.00	$1,150.50
99F	243 919293 $1,150.00	$1,357.00
99DL	300 Savage	1094275	pressed checkering $725.00 $855.50

And those are just the first auction prices. Every one of those will probably be flipped through tommyguns for a huge markup and will be on gunsinternational or gunbroker. Except that 99EG in 243.. that buttstock is not right, wood proud to the metal on sides and a huge gap behind the tang. Wonder if it will show up on gunbroker?

There were some nice guns, but when postmil 99E's in 308 with varnished birch stocks are selling for $1,120 the prices have gone where I won't touch them.

EG's in 300 going for $1150.. Mad Dog would choke. grin

Makes me feel a little better about the RS
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
That's just a sampling of the rifles, mostly just the ones that will show up on tommyguns with a huge markup. There were quite a few others.

A 99-375 brushgun without box for $3,422, 99R in 243 for about $1,600 (that one's pretty good, even with concerns about the tang area), 99K in 300 looking reblued and d&t for $1,888. Another postmil 99E in 300 for $855. One of the premil receivers made into a 99E with the rounded forearm went for $944.

I really can’t believe the price of the “E” models
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
It made no sense. A 99A in 243 for $1300? Sure.. higher than it used to be, but not absurd. A 99E in 300 for $1125? Crazy times.
Posted By: pacecars Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
I know everyone I wanted a tang safety 99A especially in .250 the bids have just gone crazy
Posted By: pacecars Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
And there is no way I am paying over $1000 for a 99E in .300 Savage.

Prices are up but I've been watching a few that nobody seems to want to touch. One is a stellar post war 99R that's on it's second auction cycle at just under 1K. One K is a high starting price by my standards but this thing is being totally ignored while guns in worse condition get priced way out of sight.

Bid on it and watch the competitive bids come flying in. Sometimes, all it takes is one person breaking the ice to confirm that the gun is worth a closer look.

I recently got aced out of a 16 gauge sxs that way. It had gone through one full cycle with no bids and was reposted. One bid and the bidders came out of the woodwork. It ended up going for far more than I was willing or able to pay.

This is exactly the reason you start the bidding at .01. Once people know they have to bid or it is going to somebody elses house it whips them into a freenzy.

Running the risk of now being an "[bleep] from Minnesota" to join the one from Oregon...

Prices on guns on GB are high? I wouldn't have known it from the countless threads about it on the campfire...
Posted By: Loggah Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
I wouldn't say prices are high, they may be high in relation to condition!! high condition guns have always been a bit more expensive. If you think there high now wait until a few more books about savage firearms come out ! smile interest creates interest!! grin
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/19/21
Not just Savages either. 1903 Springfields are behaving similarly. Colt revolvers (non-Snake models) conversely are still fairly priced. I just bought a dandy pre-war Colt Officer's Model .38 for $400+change.

It's the new norm, fellas. Inflation is rearing its ugly head, spurred on by recklessness on the part of the gov't, gougers, and panicky fear mongers. Even if things get back to "normal" I bet we're going to see prices permanently higher than before.

My advice if/when things return to normal: buy all the primers you can afford, and then a lot more. Take up bullet casting and lay in the powders to shoot them. Even though lead can be scrounged most anywhere for a little bit of nothing, and the pinches of faster burning powder per charge makes a pound of powder go a looong way, it's still the primer that's the common denominator.

Makes my 99C in 308 look good
Posted By: 99guy Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/20/21
It's not all bad news.

People with collections are smiling ear to ear. smile

People trying to build a collection, not so much... frown

This won't last forever, it never does.

Buy low, sell high

I think it's two things. Number one is ignorance, if somebody bids on it the ignorant guy who thinks he needs (wants) it goes "Oh, it must be valuable therefore I will bid on it." As long as someone else keeps bidding he thinks it must be worth a little more and he keeps bidding. The second is ego, "I'm not letting that SOB outbid me!" I don't like actions for these reasons.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/20/21
I don't like auctions for those reasons too. But sometimes one has no choice but to bite down and participate if it's something "needed". I always scour GI first when on the prowl for something.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/21/21
I've bitten the bullet (pun intended) and bid on a few "that I just had to have" but I don't like it

Yes,I agree with this statement .

Look what happened when John Barsness did the Savage 99 article back in 2005 (I believe it was 2005 . I still have the copy around somewhere) .

I brought the primer issue up some time back. Went from $30/1000 to $300/1000... now that is a price increase!!!

Whew! Prices are all over the board. I stopped in the local Cabelas' store up north here to take a look around, and low and behold a 99 was on the used rack. A 99C #A6110xx in .284W so it came home with me for about $100 Less than the lowest price on this lis. Which was crazy as I've seen them up here for $18-2600 It/s not perfect, the wood has been slobbered on, but better deal than I ever thought I'd find.

That's a good price for a 284. Anything in 284 has been selling very well on gunbroker down here, for much more. I just picked up a nice 99G in 250-3000 for a reasonable price.
Posted By: Plab Re: Whew.. prices.. - 03/28/21
I think availability is driving up the market . its not just the 99 that's gone crazy ..most everything has .. I don't know about gun shop else where through out the country but up here in Maine inventory is way down . I would say at least 50% in the shops I frequent. and it seams to be the lower end stuff that's commanding higher prices.

It's on my list. Bought at auction last month for $1,150 - resold by tommy for $2,799.
