Odd choice to engrave, but a darned good job.

The owner's story...

" When I was a boy in the early 60s, you would have found me with my face pressed against the display case at the local Big Five gun counter as I gazed at the new Savage 101s. In my mind I was a cowboy and that was the pistol I needed more than anything. Back then I measured money in terms of how many lawns I would have to mow to save up the $19.50 to purchase one. This Savage is just one of several dream guns of my boyhood that I have engraved just to thrill the ten-year-old that still lives in me."

Can't think of a better reason to choose it.
Posted By: norm99 Re: Engraving 101 - 03/26/21
I would pay $19.50 for that ,,just about any day.. Smile

Model 101 would be good gun too practice on. And I'd say the practice session went well! Nice.

Nice engraving, thanks for the photos. Let's slide sideways a bit. Do you know anything about the knife in the first two pictures? I have one that looks very similar, been carrying it to the deer woods for nearly 50 years. And I think my Dad carried it before that.

What little of it I can see favors a Marble’s Woodcraft.

I started thinking about the bizarre notion of engraving a 101, until I read the backstory. Yay for him, and excellent work!

I think I would've replaced the awful fake wood grips with something more elegant to frame the wonderful engraving.

Is the engraver someone who's currently practicing his craft?

Thanks for showing this, Rick.

It's great to fulfill a childhood dream. I filled one of mine with the '34 Ford I got last fall.

Pictures man, pictures!

I have always like the lines of that car (original, or made into a hot rod!):

It'll be a mild hot rod. It will look stock on the outside except that it will be lowered. It'll have a souped up 49 Ford flathead, a Camaro Borg Warner T5 tranny and a 9" Ford rearend. It's ugly right now.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to dig further. In the limited searching I did, I saw a couple of other Marble's knives that we have here.

No, but, it will be in the next revision of Garnett Stancil's Savage 101 Pistol book just like yours is.

The Savage Collector Forum should probably forward what we know about the 101, variations, Chicopee, Westfield, boxes, grips, etc. to Stancil for the next revision just to capture it.

your are welcome. Up until last year we had several car shows here and in Colorado. I hope they get going again. It's enjoyable to share stuff with other people.
