WOW !!!!!thats got to be a rare bird, never seen any 101,s in 22 magnum. Is the actual swing out cylinder long enough to handle a magnum? Kind of a moot question ,its probably not chambered to actually take a round. really strange! confused confused

That's got a WOW factor! shocked

Surprised that Bailey never mentioned existence of this gun . He was well acquainted with the designer/builder of the 101 and the reasons for building a few DUMMY models. I never have seen or heard of any reference to a magnum 101. Someone should ask Bailey his thoughts. I would like to hear from Dave Koch also. In the meantime, never say never!

It came out of Utica.
It is a non-firing example.
I was surprised to see a 22 mag. 101, did some quick research and decided to go with it.
More research to do.... smile

I received some comments from Bailey that a total of 10 model 101 Dummy's were made as salesman samples. He did not comment regarding the .22 mag. stamp, I'll go back and ask of that specifically.
I did ping Mr. Koch as well. Have not heard back yet....

A possible lot of prototypes that were never completed ?

Product development that was paused for some reason ?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Savage for Dummy's - 04/13/21
Simplest explanation would be that it was a partial prototype that was turned into a DUMMY play gun. Interesting it's not blued tho.

My guess its probably a "one of" no reason in the world to make a fake 22 magnum! grin special for sure.would the cylinder be long enough to accept a magnum round if it was chambered? or did they just mark the barrel 22 mag?

Loogah, take a closer look at yours, the fake cylinder is just a pivoting piece to hold a full length one piece barrel, you could chamber it for any length cartridge that was shorter than the barrel.

Yea, it's a head scratcher alright.
I don't have it in hand yet, but the seller said non-firing.
Hard to tell from the pic whether or not the barrel is plugged, but looks like it is. ??
I'll know more in a few days.

Nice find!

The .22Mag round was designed in 1959 and in production 1960. Given that the barrel is Chicopee marked I would guess that it was made close to the 1960 date.

That may explain why this one was stamped .22mag. Timing, new product, new caliber, promotional cowboy type stuff.

So, of the 10 alleged Dummy's made;
(assuming all Chicopee)
1) .22 LR
2) .22mag
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
9)
10)

Sorry to say, I have nothing I can add to the information above.
Everything I have seen or talkked about with Bailey has been tossed out already. I too have never seen nor heard one in .22 Mag Nice find !
If interested, only 11 remaining... Savage 101
The 101 Dummy is better in hand than the pics.
The chamber is plugged and no firing pin. Not sure if the ejector functions yet, no lever.
Aluminum frame, appears unfinished.
Barrel assembly is blued steel. Looks original. Marked as .22 magnum. 6 1/2" long. Standard 101 is 5 1/2".
Dummy mark font appears identical to Loggah's 101 mark.

Those are much more interesting than a standard 101 that's NOT been dicked with. grin
