Saw a 99 today that was a 22hp 24" barrel takedown with irons at one time a previous owner d & t 'ed it for weaverbases. The serial was in the184xxx range what model am I looking at? An H? Mb
An 1899H with a post-WW2 replacement barrel. Or a special order barrel, but I think I've seen more replacement barrels. Did it have a front sight ramp, or still an integral base?
Yeah 24" I measured it. You know I think it had a ramp. 60-70% gun $540 ? Mb

In the world of Savage anything is possible. Just checking.
If you want a range/field gun, price seems decent. Can’t see the price getting lower than that in the future, and most places would ask quite a bit more now.
I haven't looked down the barrel yet so we'll see the bore first. Mb
Definitely a good price for an 22HP in decent shape, even with the tapping. The prices on the HP chambered rifles has gone nuts the past few years. Even a beater would normally run more than that price most places these days. Last few I've seen for sale online have been around a grand, and they were not collector grade pieces.
Hope you find the bore is in good shape 👍
Could never get past the extra holes.
A photo of the barrel address would narrow down the year the barrel was produced.
Take a look at the barrel address. After WW II Savage made a run of 24" 22HP barrels with straight threads. I have one of them and it shoots very well. Good luck.
Steve
Well had a guy at the shop where it is look for me. It is not a drilled and tapped ramp it is the lump on the barrel one. Had him check the address too Chicoppee Falls. So we know a little more. Mb
Yep, replacement barrel. Be a bit of a heavy barrel for a pre-WWI 1899H featherweight, but should shoot well. Value is the big question... what does a replacement factory barrel do to the overall value of the rifle?
Thanks Rory I used your book but didn t get all the answers now we know why. I thank everyone for their replies. Mb

My replacement 22 HP T/D barrel is 24". My replacement barrel is a Westfield.
I have a 1920's 99G in 250-3000 with a 24" Westfield barrel also. Still takes down also, not converted to a solid frame.

That is absolute positive proof that anything Savage is possible.
Wonder what the letter would say?
7089-5 / G / 250 / ship_date
or something similar.

Did you ever check the twist on that puppy?
Yep. Manual measurement came out as 10.25”, iirc.
The letter on mine would say 1915, 250-3000 Rifle, cause that’s the action I stuck it on.
The 99G that I killed the antelope with last week has a 24" 1 in 10 twist Westfield barrel. It's on the 2021-2022 kill post. I had it fitted to a 300 99G that had been drilled and tapped. I just got a 99K 303 barrel and will have it fitted to the action. That'll give me a 3 barrel 99G.
pics of the 99's I'll hunt with this year. I've already filled my antelope tag with the 99G switch barrel. I used the last of my 100 grain Nosler BT's for this hunt. I didn't have many 100 g BT's because my other 250-3000's had 1 in 14 twist rate barrels requiring 87 g bullets. If anyone has some 100 g Nosler BT's they would part with, sell or trade I would like to talk to you.
I'll hunt elk and maybe buffalo with the 75th Anniversary. It's zeroed in and ready to go with the slip on sling I used on the 99K last year.
I put this in the wrong post. will try to move it. Don't see any way to move it.
Bought a behind the wrist and on the barrel strap but not that good would share info on it David?
I just put it on the rifle for the pic. I had trouble with the barrel/forearm strap staying in place last year. Will tighten it up before I go hunting. Will try to get some tougher lacing. I broke the buttstock lace when I tightened it down.
I think I got the strap from Midway. Someone on here may have put me onto it.
