Just got a line on 2 local 99's, a 303 and a 300. From the guys description the 300 sounds like an R. Not sure about the 303. He was a little vague, like he wasn't sure himself. I hope they are jewels. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Going to look tomorrow. It's going to be a long night. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

He wants $450 each. Hope they got some, oh hell, lots of CONDITION. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Maybe you'll get really lucky and it'll have a serial under 10,000. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Don't laugh, had a guy sell me an MHG and he threw in a Savage lever that he said had the two cartridge counters, one on the side and the other in the top of the bolt! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Or maybe the 99R will turn out to be a 99T.. keep dreaming! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I couldn't even post last night, I was so bummed out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Went and looked at the two 99's this gent had for sale. He said they has a 303 from the 1930's and a 300 from the 1950's on the phone. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well, I get to his house and he brings em out.

300 is a post mil E in so-so condition. $450; I'll pass <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Now the HeartBreaker <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />.

The 303 looks like a salesmans sample w/ the scroll stamp engraving on the reciever. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

How was it BUBBA'ed, let me count the ways <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

Non-period sling swivels, cheap after market rear fold down sight I assume because I've never seen so many bubba holes on the reciever AND barrel. Two holes inline on the barrel right over the chamber area. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Tang cracks X 3 and a nice 3" crack on the left side forearm tip.

Oh yeah, and the topper, a cheap 3/8" compass inletted into the top of the comb about an inch forward of buttplate. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />NOT. Hell of a fate for a once beautiful rifle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />.

Had to say no for $450 and wish him well.

The hunt continues <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Les,

I was gonna throw in a smart azz comment about you wantin it cuzz of the compass but i didn't have the heart after seein that poor 303.

By the way the holes over the chamber are usually on the roll engraved models but usually hid by the rear sight also 2 extra holes on either side of the cocking indicator it might not be as bubba'ed as you think. Don <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
nice to see someone has done their homework.
Don,

Please elaborate, if you would be so kind. Maybe all is not lost, but this rifle is still a little rough looking. Thanks.

Salesman samples as these roll stamped model are called usually have 6 holes drilled and tapped on them ,2 for the tang sight ,2 near the cocking indicater and 2 on the barrel chamber area where the rear sight would cover them up , also most of the ones ive seen had the flat sling studs. Don
it's also a factory engraved rifle for an affordable price.
Yup - my "Saleman's sample" has these holes just as Don describes. I'll have to get it out of the safe and check out the swivels. Maybe they are factory. I am struck how these guns keep turning up! I wonder if they made a few hundred or so? By the way, let's not forget that there were other Savages made without the roll stamping (e.g. some 99EG's) that had these same tap holes.
Boltman, i have one of those without engraving also has the holes and sling studs with no checkering. Don
Before I bought my "salesman sample" and became familar with these guns, I had bought a minty M99EG through the internet and it came with these extra holes in it. I sent it back admonishing the seller for sending me a gun with "extra" holes in it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> By the way, I don't think it is more likely these were a "special run" for a big distributor.
Thanks Don and Jed. I think I am reconsidering that 303. Sure is nice to be able to consult the oracles grin wink
The salesmans sample that I had is pictured on savagela.org.I sent for a letter and callahan said he spoke to the previous historian(Roe Clark I think) and he thought that a distributor in PA. had made a special order.
