Plugged barrel?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
I'd have to think plugged barrel or double charge on powder.
Posted By: Jaaack Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
Definitely would be interested in the details of the cause.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
you guys have to stop destroying them. They don't make them any more. What did he load it with, C4?
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
Looks like he might have fired seven before it went kablewy. I'd be unloading the rest and checking them.
Posted By: oldfoneguy Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
Judging from the rust inside and out it doesn't look like it was well cared for.
Posted By: Poconojack Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
It blowed-up
Posted By: 300jimmy Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
Looks like the work of FedEx to me.
Posted By: damnesia Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/29/22
A little JB Weld and some buffing, good as new.

The cerakote dribbled down da tube?
As I understand it, the deceased was attempting to launch a golf ball.

Yes! What the hell is the backstory on this? Why all the mystery about what might have happened??
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/31/22
Receiver was just seen at a gun show.. I don't know that more details are known, at least known for sure.
Posted By: zcm82 Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/31/22
Oh, dang. I had thought you meant the member holding it was the kablooey master.
Posted By: mathman Re: Another destroyed 99 - 05/31/22
Of course I used Bullseye powder. I wanted to hit the bullseye.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Another destroyed 99 - 06/02/22
I'll see if I can find the pic? My neighbors son, in WV, had a Savage 110 in 270 turn the barrel into a banana peel. They called Savage and Savage ask what ammo. They said Hornady factory. Savage said that Hornady had a bad batch of ammo, the machine skipped a shot of powder now and then. They said call Hornady and they would replace the rifle. But, they though it looked so cool as a wall hanger they just kept it.
Posted By: 99guy Re: Another destroyed 99 - 06/02/22
That has to be a result of a barrel obstruction.

You can't put enough powder in a short case to do that kind of damage.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Another destroyed 99 - 06/03/22
Randy, are you referring to the picture or Jeremy turning his 110 into a peeled banana? They think Jeremy's rifle was a squib load. If it split the barrel half way down, would the obstruction be closer to the muzzle?
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Another destroyed 99 - 06/03/22
As a general rule a "squib" load* causes destruction behind where the bullet is stuck in the barrel, wherever that point may be. A plugged muzzle will "banana peel" back from the muzzle, how far back being dependent on the dimensions and metallurgy of of the steel in the barrel and the pressure that the obstruction is stopping.

*Seemingly overnight, once upon a time long ago, the term "squib" entered shooter's vocabularies to describe a bullet stuck in a barrel. How that came about is beyond me, probably just another instance of average American's disregard for definitions/pronunciation/spelling/grammar/etc. In fact, there was a Mr. Squibb who designed bullet moulds to cast bullets intended for low velocity close range target practice, plinking, pest control, etc. Ammunition loaded with his bullets was called "squibb loads". Evidently someone stuck a bullet in a barrel when employing squibb loads and blamed it on the load and not the fact he probably did a dumbass thing like creating a super light load that couldn't push the bullet out the end of the barrel, and it caught on. Poor Mr. Squibb's name was forever maligned.

As a purveyor of mouse farts, Mr. Squibb deserves the eternal shame associated with his name ๐Ÿ˜
