Just got an email from the publisher that my advance copy is in. I emailed them back asking when copies will be available for sale. Will post here when I find out.
Awesome!
Looking forward to it.👍
great news. can't wait David
They emailed me that it would be 8 to 10 weeks before the books will be available. It sure wasn't that long between the author's copy and regular books on the "Collector's Guide."
Thanks for the update David. Looking forward to it!!
A guy named John at the publisher sent me an email yesterday after I got off the internet saying the book won't be available to slobs like me until Feb 28. They have to provide copies to backorders and retailers before the author can get copies. Being a writer with this publisher reminds me of being a movie extra. Movie extras suck hind tit behind everyone else.
Well that just seems wrong that the writer of a book can’t even get a copy of their book when everyone else does.🤦♂️
On the bright side though, that seems to indicate to me there is pretty good demand for it. Every cloud...
I am getting a preliminary copy in a few days. But they say I can't get a large number for resale until Feb 28. That's ridiculous. The printer will do the whole run in a very short time then move on to something else. Maybe my preliminary copy was air mailed from where ever the book was printed (probably China) but it won't take 3 1/2 months for the rest of them to arrive. I suspect that the fact that I sold about 400 copies of the first book in a very short time cut into the sales of the commercial retailers and by delaying shipping books to me they are giving the commercial retailers more time to take customers away from me. One of their excuses is that they have to fill backorders first. To me that sounds like the publisher and amazon already have a lot of orders that they are going to ship before they let me have copies.
I have no idea what the demand will be. Some people on here have no interest in engraved Savages but bought copies of the first book. I am hoping that it will sell to non Savage enthusiasts who are into engraved firearms. Rick's original research into the engravers should also help sell copies to people who want to know more about the engravers who engraved a lot of other popular firearms as well as their work on the Savages.
I hope all of you will wait until I can provide you with an inscribed and signed copy of the book.
David
Thanks for sticking with it, and seeing it Through David!
Will definitely patiently wait for signed copy.
Bruce
Seems to me pretty much everyone who got a signed book 1, will want a signed book 2 to go with it. I certainly do. I’m waiting for mine.
I will definitely wait. Should make for good winter reading!
David, I will want 3 copys, when you get them in hand!Don
You got it Don. How many does Dick want?
I'll take one also, David. Thanks Mike
David, when you started the second book project a number of us indicted that we would like the same number signed book as the first book. I assume you have a record of those requests?
Thanks Savage Hunter. I've got you down.
Jaaack, I can't find the list showing the book number. I'll need to get it from you guys before I send the book out.
David, #399 for me if you want to start a new list.
you know i will take 3 again.
David I think if you go back 1 or 2 of your posts about the book you will find some of the numbers.
norm
The preliminary copy came yesterday. Looks good.
They said if I get on the back order list I "MAY" get copies a little earlier.
thanks Jaaack. I got you down.
Norm, I'll check back on the earlier posts. I've got you down for 3.
Not sure on how many Dick may want,i figured he would chime in.
I want one. I'm number 8
CMHJohn was number 60 (FYI). I know he would have wanted one but I don't know how you would get it to him.
I will take one also, David. My number on 1st book is 375. Thank you. Keith
Got you both on the list.
I ordered 100 copies a few minutes ago. They MAY get here late Jan or early Feb.
David
Just to refresh your memory #7 to match my first book as I have gun 10,007. GW
I’m in for two again. I’ll double check , but I think I’m 22 and 23.
David, I would like the new engraved book signed. My first book is not signed, so I would like to order the pair signed please
Mike Pyeatt
GW and Joe, you are on the list.
99Ozarks, I'll put you on the list for one of each. I should have plenty of numbers available in the high 100's and low 200's. I sold those books at gun shows in Ohio, Kansas and Colorado.
For those of you who don't know. I numbered the first book 1 of 500, 2 of 500, etc. I will number the second book in the same way, giving priority to duplicate the number in the new book for people who have the earlier book with a number.
Put me down for one David. I’m not home right now, but I think I was 53.
I’ll check later.
Blitz
Helo David I will take 3 the number not an issue THANKS i will get the check in the mail .
David, I have 53 of 500.
Blitz
Please put me down for a copy.
Number is not an issue.
Congratulations and thank you,
Ed
Did you ever come up with the price for the book yet
price is $79.99. I will ship no extra charge via media mail. First class $15 lower 48.
How about some pics from the new book?
Monarch Grade
G grade
1895
Dick Johnson's C grade
Manlicher prototype
two pages comparing PE engraving
A2 short rifle
Tue engraved 99K
early Gough engraved 99K
I don't know why the last 2 pics are blurred. They look much better in the book. Tue's engraved K's look just like his A engraving on the 1899's. The most noticeable thing about Gough's engraving is the circle in the middle is less intricate than Tue's. There is a lot of variation in the K engraving attributed to Gough. Probably because he had other people working with him. The engraving on the PE's and DE's varied a lot also.
Rick 99's RMEF
A few more pics.
Me with 99K and mule deer
Bottom of blued DE receiver
Ralph McElwain's 99 Centennial in 308. Probably the only centennial in 308. all the others were 300 Savage.
engraved case set
My 99K with the engraved Lightfoot mount
Brent Geistweidt and his Dad Dan with a non typical whitetail Dan shot on White Ghost ranch
The book's cover
David what is the total for 3 books shiped Thanks Dick Johnson
Let me check and see what number my first book is.
Dick, you get one free because you are a contributor. I'll make the other two $75 a piece as an added thank you. So $150 total. No extra charge for media mail shipping.
Thanks for all your hard work David.
Looking back 20 plus years to when Savage levers appeared on the Gun and Knife internet site with 10 plus questions for every answer. Now we have three new books covering just about every aspect of the Savage lever rifles. It is something I would never have imaged at that time. I think there is still another books worth out there that we have not discovered. We just have to continue looking and recording the data.
A big " thank's" to Doug Murray for setting the corner stone and all the 24HourCampFire members, current and past, that helped with the puzzle...one piece at a time. We ain't done yet!
I have to echo Rick99's sentiment. When I joined in 2003, I knew NOTHING about 99's. Now, I know enough to be dangerous. I even learned to reload for my HP22 from this site. The journey has been amazing thanks to efforts like David and all the other members here.
I wouldn't have missed it. It is FUN!

It is definitely a labor of love. I am really happy with the engraved book.
I have thought of a few revisions for the collector's guide. The transition 99E is one. I didn't know it existed when I wrote the collector's guide. I also failed to include a 99A with the medium weight barrel. Fortunately, I have one of each. I may do a definitive section on 1899 checkering also. I touched on the checkering quite a bit in the engraved book but I didn't group all the info into one place.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

norm
You are on the list with your preferences Norm.
I'm so excited for this book.
David,
New member here - first post, but I have followed threads for a few months. I thought I saw a comment from you somewhere that you would send a signed copy of volume 1 and 2 for $125? I can’t find the comment now. I plan to send you a check for volume 2, but would love to get both volumes if able.
I have reached out to you in the past outside of the forum regarding an engraved 1899. It was not factory engraved. When I get more competent on this sight I hope to post some pics of it to see if any members can help me learn more about it.
I can send out a copy of volume 1 now. I will follow up with volume 2 when it is available. You can send me $60 now for volume 1 and a check for the remaining balance for volume 2 later or a check for both $125 and I will send you volume 2 as soon as they come in. Thanks, David
David,
Please put me down for one book. I believe my first one was numbered 358 but will double check that. Will drop a check in the mail.
Dale
