Looking for a Savage Model 24 over/under combination gun. Wondering if there is anything specific I should be looking at when purchasing one, any known problems?

Well that ought to keep him busy for the next few years finding one. Standard 357/20 ga is easier to find and 357 ammo is everywhere, GW

I think his question was "...any known problems?" not what is the hardest calibers to find.

The late ones with the composite stocks were heavy. The stocks looked like a plastic affair, but I think they were made of concrete.

The barrels can't be regulated and seldom shoot to the same poa.

You folks cry when you see the price of 1899/99's. You would need to dig REAL deep into your wallet and have a secret stash besides to buy a .357 max combo.

I am under the impression that this is specific to the 357 max/20ga. I know of only one example

I passed on a minty 357 max/20 for $100 (in 2001) because I didn’t like the looks of the very blond and blotchy stock. It looked similar to the top gun in longbeard’s picture.

Some of them don't shoot consistent groups from the rifle barrels. There isn't any way to regulate the barrels, so accuracy is a crap shoot, one that you won't know the answer to until you own it and have a chance to shoot it.

IME, the rimfire 24s have been more accurate than the center fire ones.

One of my favorite woods loafing guns is a 24 in 22M/410.

The combo guns with soldered barrels are reputed to shoot good groups, at least for the first few shots. My 24DL .22WRM/.410 3" will shoot .22 WRM or .410 Brenneke Silver Bear slugs to consistent POIs at 50 yds and 30 yds respectively for the first few shots. As mentioned above, the rimfire barrel is not regulated with the shotgun barrel so each has it's own POI.

How I deal with the two different POIs is with a scope. The scope has a tic marked duplex reticle. The center of the duplex is zeroed for the .22WRM whereas the shotgun slug zero is a co-ordinate within the reticle grid.
