What can y’all tell me about these? I never considered one before because the 99 and 20 were all ways the sexy ones. I am considering one now. I know they were available in .30-06 so I would assume the strength is there. I haven’t ever had my hands on one so I am flying blind. How do they lock up? Front lugs or rear?

Rear lug lock up. They have what I call a 22 bolt on steroids. I have an 06 and 250. I’d keep within specs with reloading, which for the 06 during the years these guns were made was likely 2700 fps, or military spec. The 40/45 was set to a lower price point than the 99 and, though I never heard anyone mention it, because of that it may have helped keep Savage solvent through the lean years of the Great Depression. I think they’re honest rifles worthy of attention.
I have a Savage 45 Super Sporter in 250-3000. It's a sweet, accurate rifle. Note that the 250-3000 rifles back then had a slower twist designed for 87 grain or lighter bullets. The 100 grain bullets typically loaded in factory ammo may not be accurate.
I also have a model 45 Super Sporter in 30-30. it is a sweet little rifle too as are my 23C Sporter in 32-20 and my 23B Sporter in 25-20.
My model 40 Super Sporter in 30-06 is on the heavy side so it's not as handy as the others.
The Super Sporters are neat rifles that reflect the leaner years in our world. It's a piece of history.
If the rifle you are considering is reasonably priced and in good condition, I think you should buy it.

IMO the only 2 things wrong with the 40/45 Super Sporters were the triggers, which are the same as the 19 and 23 series rifles, and that they superseded the superior 1920 design. I've owned several of them, at least one chambered in each of the four cartridges that they were made in.
Like the man said, if the price and condition are in sync and it is something that you want, buy it. If you don't like it, you can probably flip it for what you put into it.
If any of you are interested, I have a Lyman peep sight for that rifle that you should find will have 2 holes factory drilled for it at the back left side of the receiver . It's new but no box or screws . Next time I'm down in the States I could put it in the mail , probably early April.

The early 40/45s magazine release was the tab on the bottom right side, the middle picture, while the later style magazine release was the button on the right side of the stock, first picture. The third picture looks like a Winchester 54.
Savage not only made the deluxe model but also an early & late versions. The early type had the mag release on the side wood under ejection port. Bit unsightly to my mind. The latter one had it relocated to bottom mag midsections. Looks like a sliver and gloves could be a real impediment!

The early style also had a rounded "English style" forearm, while the later style had a schnabled forearm tip.
IIRC, the 40/45 first showed up in catalog #65.
what would be a fair price for 1 in fair shape i dont think that i have ever seen one at a gun show in BC or Alberta.
