I was going to make a thread over on the FB page about replacement barrels. Many of the folks over there have never heard of them. I always get bugged out eyes when I show people my 22HP barrel with a Westfield address. I’m having photo skill problems, when I resolve them Ill do that thread. If you guys want to talk about them again, maybe to bring new members up to date on them, that would be great. When I get to my desk I’ll post pics of mine again.

Just playing with the barrel, I had an idea? It came off a 99F. The T/D lug lines up with my 1926 F. But it’s a frog hair short of indexing. It does have the old threads pattern. I could have it installed on any old action.

So, my next question? Did any actions come out of Westfield with the old thread pattern? Or, did any old thread pattern actions have serial numbers that could have come from Westfield? I’m thinking a Westfield F in 22HP, and let the future generations scratch their heads saying, “ the numbers are good, the barrel address is good, must be a custom for an executive.”

Of course I’d put the story under the butt plate.

In Westfield they could do the pre-1960 threads to replace a barrel or convert a gun.. but the new 99's had a different thread pattern. And the post-900,000 rifles have different internals than the pre-900,000 - so you probably would have significant problems getting a 22HP/303 Sav/30-30 to work in a 900,000+ gun.

Now.. you could find a 1950's 99F in the 7xx,xxx range in 300 Savage and convert it. Parts would swap with older guns much more easily.

I'd just find a beater 99T and put it on. grin

I have a 24" 22HP barrel but with the Chicopee address. Also have .303 off a Model K.

If I did a 50's rifle I might do an R, love my R's. But the whole purpose would be to mess with the collectors of the future.

I have a 99G in 250-3000 with a Westfield barrel.

Would be great to put onto a cut checkered DL.. except the threads aren't right.

Probably most confusing thing I could do is put it on one of my premil 1960 99E's in 300.. but that's not really messing with collectors, just creating a fraudulent super rare gun (not sure anybody has found a premil 1960 99E in 250?).

So they/savage did make a square thread tang safety post mill rifle probably more than one.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Replacement Barrels - 05/24/23
So, do the pre mil E’s have the old thread? Being pre mil I would think so? The one thing I have never done is try and see what twist it had. I assumed since it was a replacement, it would have a slower twist. But?

I’m sure the premil 1960 99E’s have the square threads.

There are a number of postmil 99’s that show up with Chicopee Falls barrels. Those are likely the best bet for finding square threads on a postmil. I thought somebody checked once upon a time, but heck if I remember, or if checking one makes a definitive answer.

I had a 1960 or 61 99E 250-3000 barrel with square threads.

Serial number above or below 1,000,000?
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Replacement Barrels - 05/25/23
20" carbine barrel, not receiver, so 1961 no?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Replacement Barrels - 05/25/23
Probably.. though barrel length isn't really dependent on where the receiver was made.

If Westfield, that'd be interesting. Did they continue square threads for 99E's for a while? I can't think of any possible reason they would.

We have seen one here that check out. It has the lowest serial I have seen in this group of premil 1960E's.

I have a 22 HP serial #130xxx made in 1912 with a replacement barrel stamped Utica NY.

Once upon a time I thought about getting a set of replacement barrel's In all of the chamberings and factories available, or at least as many as I could find. But, I gave up.

Is yours 24' with ramp front sight?

Mine is 22 inch barrel with an integral sight.

In that case I'd make the story you put under the buttplate as about as wild and inaccurate as you could make it. Maybe even scratch in Arthur Savage's name with some sort of personal inscription to his best friend Joe!

i have at least 3 30-30 24 inch rebarrels, from the mid 20s to 30s production guns.

The post 900,000 E can be converted to rimmed case by installing the correct carrier and cartridge guide. I just finished converting a post mil 308 E to 375 Win. This required removal of material from the magazine cavity to accommodate the fatter (forward) cartridge dimensions, but material removal is not required for the 30-30, 303, 25-35 or 22HP. I have not tried a 32-40 or 38-55. I modify 308 carriers to fit the rimmed cases as well, because I have a bunch of them on hand. It does complicate installation of the carrier a bit, but once installed, they work well.
