So picked up a very nice 1935 99T in 30-30, and it arrived just in time for Christmas. Only real downside was it had studs installed.. But I've been looking for a 99T in 30-30 for quite a while, and got tired of waiting. Even has the original sights.

Finally got around to looking close at the studs tonight.. and I've never seen vintage studs like them. They sure look like they've been there a long time.

They have a button on the bottom, and when pushed there are bearings that retract and allow the stud to be removed from it's anchor. Looks very modern.. but I don't think it is.

Anybody ever seen anything like these?

I have seen one other 99 with those in VA about 15 years ago. I remember they were well made and looked cool.

They are sturdy things..

How long as Uncle Mike's been making those? I knew there were some recent ones.. but these bases look like they've been in the gun for a long time.

Found an ad for something very similar in a 1954 American Rifleman.. push button detachable sling swivels with flush bases, $1.80 per pair from Herters of Waseca, MN.

That I could believe...

Here's an improvement where the balls are replaced with lugs to make a much more secure attachment and the release button pushes against an angled bottom to retract them for release.

I have set of those on my 99F 358. Unfortunately they were installed on the side of the buttstock and forearm instead of on the bottom.

Thank you, Gene. That top one looks like it exactly.

Nasj22, on the side of the stock? Oh my…

My Dad and I put a few of those swivels on rifles back in the 60's. Probably got them from Herter's which was where we got most everything of that nature.

Rory, it looks as if the forearm fitting replaces the screw that holds on the forearm, so it would have to have machine screw threads as opposed to wood screw threads.

I'm curious as to how the fittings get installed with the top flush to the wood. It looks as if that part has a square depression in the bottom into which a tool could be fitted. Is that the case?

Nice looking gun.

I could live with the swivels... smile

I didn't get anything near that cool for Christmas. Nice gun.

The base has a bottom with a hole for a screw to go through, and that screw goes into the forearm stud on the barrel to hold it down. If you look at Gene's first patent drawing, you can see how a flat head regular screw is sitting in the bottom of the stud. That's the case here.
Remove the swivel.
Then remove the screw that holds the base/forearm to the barrel.

I have a set.................on a 1967 vintage non Savage. Certainly not factory as none of the non Savage came with sling attachments.

That's a very clever design. Remove the sling and you don't have the clunky studs left sticking out of the stock. Much harder to install than the 'Uncle Mikes' style but superior in practice I would say. BTW - Uncle Mike's is no more. Grovtec took it over after Mike's shut down.

Just looked at Grovtec and they are making the very same design! Don't know if they have one for the 99 forearm.

Thanks. I didn’t study the drawings closely enough.

I have a set of those. I bought them in a sporting goods store in about 1956. Mounted on a 722 Rem.

i have made some extra bases so I can use the same sling on several guns.

Nice T, too bad about the swivels, but T’s in 30-30 dont come along to often!

My Dad put them on his Rem. 722 in 1961. I would almost bet that He bought them from Herters. We used to buy about everything from Herters at Wasika MN. I have bought several 722's that have those swivels on in past years. He put a Weaver K4 on it with Weaver swing away scope rings on the 722. For close shots on fox he always used open sights. I miss him so much it hurts.
