First Id like to say GeneB rebuild and pics of the 1920 work he did was extremely valuable to a newbie like me.
I've inherited my Grandfathers 1920 with the safety moving with movement. Going from fire, sliding back towards Safe and causing a problem.
Disassembled it and Found the Catch has flattened and rust on the catch and in the bar divots. See pics attached.

After removing the slight rust and exposing the catch head.

My question is, Is the Catch 20-2047 and spring 20-2048 narrow enough to be brought out the bottom of the Safety Bar Post? 20-2049.

With alittle rust that was on the catch, Id like to get them out and examine the spring also.

Remaking the Catch, Id like to measure the Divots on the Catch Bar, Width and Depth. (At work I have access to a specific microscope that is made for just that.)
And try to come up with a more rounder head to fit in the Divots in the bar.

I can see the more pointy the tip is going to wear down sooner. But if they will come out the bottom of 20-2049 they can easily be changed out.

My first thoughts are measure the old Catch back end that fits in the spring for length and width. Have a small section of .125" like GeneB said to keep it in 20-2049 straight and a rounded tip for the end to match the Divot dia. So as it wears down it'll still fit in the Divot.

But might go with a point if that works better.

Anybody else have to replace the catch? I thought I heard in GeneB thread for the 1920 project, someone else had to make one.

Thanks for your input and advice

I have other questions about serial numbers on the gun in different spots, the Star punched into the wood down from the serial number and the letters behind the trigger guard. "Y M" I saw someone had X on a pic in the same spot.

Waiting on my letter from the archives.

They will fit through the slot, it looks like the ones in your gun are just held in by rust & dirt and they might be fine once loosened up.
Yes I suspect the spring has some rust holding it and would like to get that out and clean any rust that could continue. Thanks for confirming. Looking at the 1923 diagram it's hard to tell. Better to get it all cleaned out
After some coaxing the Spring and Catch freed and below are the pictures.

I measured the Safety bar at 0.10" width. Ill measure these and add pics with measurements tomorrow.

After cleaning everything up, Spring, Catch and Bar Divots. And gently expanding the spring ever so slightly..

The Safety works as is. Even rounded like pictured. And has good spring rebound. Ill still make up some replacements, but I will say, Savage parts list picture is dead on.
Its tiny with little backend that goes into the spring. The 1923 Diagram shows a little pointer catch.

Thanks to GeneB for his prior work and help.

I have the most trouble getting the pics to be under 97 KB from a good phone camera.

Attached are pics with measurements. They are pretty close in all pics.
The color changed when I made the images smaller.

Good info. I added to Gene's info on the 1920.

Thanks.
