Good morning everyone. I need some advice/opinions from the experts. I have a Savage 99 buttstock that I aquired a while back. I have refinished several gunstocks but have never fit one to an action. This is a nice walnut stock that is semi finished. I believe that this is above my skill level and am thinking about selling it. I would hate to ruin a beautiful piece of walnut. It has impressions where it appears to have been fit to an action. Smells like it had a coat of linseed oil a long time ago. Upper tang is 3", length from receiver end to butt is 15 & 5/8". Any advice on how much I should ask for it if I decide to sell. Thanks in advance.

That a nice piece of wood. Pluses is the prominent grain and the aspects of the grain running straight through the wrist and a nice Monte Carlo. Detractors are the voids in wrist burl.

I purchased a similar stock from another member for about $100 in the last 6 months. I've seen the prices that are asked for butt stocks over a pretty wide range of prices.

If you decide to sell it, I'd also be interested in purchasing it.

Good luck with your choice.

You can also look at eBay, that is usually the top of the market prices outside if ordering from a stock maker. There are several stocks there, some which have been listed for a year it so.

Yes, I've noticed that. I see some that don't have the stock bolt hole drilled in them. Some do. Going to spend some more time looking around. May try to find someone that can help me fit it. Might try some of the gun dealers around here and ask who does their stock work.

It's a pretty stock and you will be able to find someone to fit it for you.

I think that is what I'm going to try. I have a few leads to chase. Thanks for the replies.

The Treebone carving site does a pretty good job explain how to fit and the tools needed. A straight stock is a ton easier than a pistol grip. Also has links for forend and but plate. I have done a couple, as I am not an expert, I use needle files because you cain’t put it back once you take it off…..and work 20 to 30 mins at a time…and usually a whole winter project…at times not relaxing, but when done you have something to be proud of.

Thanks for the information. I started working on it. I do about 30 minutes at a time. Patience and careful sanding. Will be a while obviously until it's done. Looking at photos online and the two buttstocks I have. I'll get there eventually.
