Stever - I've thought about buying that very rifle from Cabelas - just to have a Savage with that sight on it. But, this rifle has its share of problems. I have several Winnies in M1886, M1894 and M1895 with this sight - and love the sight. I would really like a Savage fitted with this sight and I can say in the last 30+ years, I have seen a very small handful. One often sees Winchesters that are drilled for this sight - and the sight is missing. This very rarely happens with Savages. If I found a sight, I wouldn't want to put holes in a Savage that was free from extra holes. Let me ask this - who on this forum has a Savage fitted with this sight?
LYMAN #21 SIGHT IS MADE FOR WIN./MARLIN/REM. NOT SAVAGE. SO WOULD MAKE THIS GUN PRICE WAY WAY TO HIGH WITH EXTRA HOLES IN IT.
BUT THE SIGHT IS IN THE PRICE RANGE OF 350/520 ON WHICH MODEL OF WINCHESTER IT FITS. THE SIGHT IS WORTH MORE THAT THE GUN WITH EXTRA HOLES. BUT SOMEONE WITH MORE MONEY THAT BRAINS WILL BUY IT FROM CABLES AT THAT PRICE.
Would Not Buy,,Just Like to Browse And See Whats In Or Out.

I belive there Was a Post On that about 8 Months ago the Rory(Calhoun) Put Up and that Sight has Always Stuck in the Back Of My Mind.

I gots one on a 99G in 30-30 that I bought from Wes. Its a nice sight and since the rifle was drilled by someone else, I can live with it. Nice sight wouldn't kick it out of the safe for wearin one....Or something like that.

Bushwacker - what letters are stamped on the inside of your receiver sight? To me, it looks like your sight was made for a Winchester. The Cabela's rifle sight looks different and fits the the contour of the receiver. I don't think the sight on the Cabelas rifle would fit on a Winchester or a Marlin. I know Stroebel does not list a Savage application for the No. 21 or No. 38 receiver sight, but I believe they did make one for the Savage rifle - and the one on the Cabela's rifle is it.
Mine is for a Winchester. Its a 38 (Windage adjustable) so it is adjusted most of its way to the right, but it works anyway. Ryan

I recall Jed was looking for a sight to fit a M86 Winchester. Would be interested to know what stamp mark is on the inner side of Ryan's sight.
There was a version of the 21 made for Savage 1899s. It's a rare sight, not often seen. I have a couple of them - one mounted on a rifle - and one that is unmounted. They are marked 'SA' on the inside. Chris
Boltman, I see the difference, I removed mine when I bought it from Wes and know it is for a Winchester 1894 and is marked "DA". The Savage ones have the contour where mine has the straight edge, but again, it works good. Ryan
Thanks Chris! I knew I wasn't hallucinating. I'm confident the Cabela's gun has the correct sight and I'll bet it is marked "SA" as are yours. I'm envious of what you have. On the one that is mounted on the rifle - have you lettered that gun?

the sight is definately unique!
I just don't know if I could get excited about a 1899 "C" configuration in a 303 Savage with only a 24 barrel even if the sight is correct and marked "SA"
Bert - wasn't enough appeal to get me to pull the trigger on the deal, but still, over the past many decades I have had VERY few opportunities to purchase a Savage with the correct Lyman side mount sight mounted on it. And, I wonder if any of these "letter"?
Curb appeal!
A friend of mine taught me a guns gotta have "curb appeal".
Condition rules but some guns have got "curb appeal", they just catch your eye and say "take me home with you".
They can resell quick, too.

In response to your original question, "Are they any good?", of course they're good! It's a peep sight! If nothing else, it increases your sight radius. But more importantly, it makes consistant sight alignment quick and easy, requiring very little training or practice.
Just for kicks, get ahold of something with a peep. Try to aim it incorrectly. Your eye will pick up very small errors, and your brain will automatically force the correction. No thought required. You will find it requires thought to do it wrong!
Peep sights are the bomb! In my opinion.

In my experience, everything Rakkasan is saying here is 100% true for me. Peep sights really are the Bomb!
Jed just picked up a climbing Lyman for his winny, about 2 weeks ago, out that big auction on E-bay, i have also looked at that Cabelas rifle, as I like the sight also! but to much, for that rifle, for my blood! John

Yes, Lyman made some of these sights specifically for Savage. They are stamped "SA" on the inside and they will not fit any other rifle. Also, some sights made for different models were modified to fit a Savage. I think it would be true to say that the one from Cabellas is an "SA" version and the M99EG that Bushwacker shows above was made for a Winchester.
I like it too, and I wouldn't kick it out of the safe for wearing it either. in fact, I'd invite it into mine. If it were anybody but Cabela's with that gun for sale I'd make an offer on it. I've seen Savages with allot worse done to them. JMO.
