Hi folks

I have the opportunity to pick up a Savage Model 40 super sporter in .30-06 but I don't know a great deal about this model. I thought that it would make a nice companion to my Model 20 in .250-3000.

I will be bringing this one back from the dead (or at least in deep sleep) so I would like to know if stocks and parts are available for it.

thanks

Dick
Dick,

I don't own a Model 40 or 45, yet, so I did not want to be first to reply. However, I have one or two relatively high slots on the priority list for either, and I have watched prices and parts over the years. Like any old, small-production and less-than-popular rifle, parts are difficult to find. The most common parts source is cannibalized rifles, up until recently found on eBay.

New replacement stocks are available from various stock reproduction outfits. Original magazines, especially in 30/06, are relatively common. Butt plate, screws, swivels and some sights will be common to M99 rifles of the late 1920s through 1930s. The Lyman 40S receiver sight is relatively common. The trigger guard, bolt, and trigger group parts will be hardest to find.

Having the '40' version instead of '45', means a non-checkered stock (reproduction) and no receiver sight are proper.

Just how 'deep sleep' is this rifle?
'deep sleep' sounds to me like 'spinnin' ur wheels'.
YMMV.
I sounds like a potential $$ pit to me.

The Savage 40s & 45s in 30-06 had a reputation for setting the locking lugs back, probably due to it rear locking lug format. I have owned a few 40s and 45s over the years, but never felt that they were a particularly great design.

If you're looking for a project, go for it!

Jeff
I think if Dick is Canadian he has already gone for it, the one thats been in the classifieds for about 2 months now went "sold" a couple days ago. A fair price for the condition it was in, if it was the same one in 30-06 were talking about.
