Over the last year or so I've noticed in this forum that the Savage 99 EG isn't held in as high a regard as many of the other models.....or so it seems from the comments.

Maybe it's not sought by true "collectors" due to it not being very rare, but as far as I am concerned it is the prettiest, best balanced of the 99's and is by far my favorite. I've even gone so far as to replace the wood on a late-model (post 99) .358 with EG wood (the original straight stock and "scooped-out" forend are stored for later if I ever sell another gun....or whoever inherits it wants to). It just looks and feels better with that slim pistol grip and splinter, snobble forend to me.

To me.....the "F" models are OK but with a forend that is too deep and thick to feel good. The "T" is like an "F" with an infection....the forend is all "swoll-up" and too heavy and clumsy. The early "A" models are alright but I prefer the feel of a pistol grip. I own all of these variations but none "fell" right except the EG.

Am I wrong? Is the EG as unpopular as I think it is? If so I am very willing to buy-trade for any you have that are too "ugly" for your taste.

Who else likes the EG and if not tell me why and which model you do prefer.

........for some you could even put a compass in the stock to make it "better" and still have a great felling EG.
+1 for the EG..
they're a little heavy............but my favorite also - EG

I love the EG, next to the old 1899's it is the "classic" Savage 99 to me. Well, okay, the 99G hits the mark also. I've got 3 99T's, and 3 99EG's, and like them about the same. Agree that the 99T doesn't have that classic Savage look or feel to it though.

Finding one in 99+% condition is rare though ...... and if you do stumble on one that is - hope you're smart enough to snatch it up . You can't be a " true Savage 99 collector " and not own one . Some caliber offerings are indeed hard to find . Namely one in .243 WCF and 22 Hi-Power ......

Preach on brother Rick .... preach on ! wink .... The EG - as far as my tastes go , is the most appealing to the eye yes , perfect balance / feel coupled with the 24 inch barrel for maximum velocity and longer sight radius ( for tang / peep sights ) all this with no " muzzle heavy " feel to it ... The EG is the best model 99 ever designed . The majority of the men buying a 99 thought the same thing because it out sold all the other variations ..and for good reason .

I assume you are referring to the post WW-II " F " ..... I got to say that the " F " is the best hunting lever action ever designed due to the " feathery feel " , and in my experience , the most accurate 99 due to the superior metallurgy / tooling that was available when it was marketed ( after WW-II ) . But this can be said about any 99 made after 1947'ish ........

Side note : the most accurate 99 I own is a 1956 " F " chambered for the .243 WCF .... 1/2 inch groups @ 100 yards all day long if I do my part .

The early " F " is also a very nice field rifle ...

That's too funny ! grin ... I regard the " T " as a anemic R/RS - down sized if you will ...... clumsy and club like for sure with no distinct lines .... most guys like the " T " because there are few of them - pure and simple . grin

I too prefer the pistol grip .... especially the pistol gripped perch bellied variations that were made prior to 1920 ....

Here's my wonderful rat EG's..

PS: The 99T attracted me before I ever knew it was rare. Got my Murray's, and that was the page that I kept coming back to. When I ran into my first 99T (the 250-3000), knew it was love. grin

But the EG is the workhorse and would be my first recommendation for helping anybody pick out a Savage hunting rifle.
If I EVER find a 99T that I can afford, the whole world will know it.!!!!!! smile grin

I LIKE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE E.G.
Some folks around consider them tomato_stakes/Fence posts!>Sorry Joe! grin
There has always been somthin about a any gun with a schnable!
It Feels Right When Holding,Has a Classy Look.
But Then I Like My "T"'s ever since i got my 1st,,compared to an R or F it's just Somethin About Them.
My 1st Choice is a T and 2nd would Be an E.G. any anything there after.

I like my EGs,but the deer hate them!
I have only one 99...it is an EG. Best looking of the 99's by far!

I have two bolt actions I really love; a 50 year old Husqvarna in .243 and a Mauser .30-06 that belonged to my grandfather. They have the schnabel forearm.
Posted By: oldotter Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
I love my EG. It was the schnoble that fueled my savage additiction. It feels for me like part of my anatomy when I throw it up to shoot.
It might be the "heavy rifle" of the savage line, but the pre war "R" is a thing of beauty too.
No matter which specific model you gravitate to, you can't loose. (IMHO)

Everybody probably getting sick of that picture, but its the second biggest I have ever shot, so gotta keep posting it!!Was really glad I grabbed the 250 that morning, was going to take my pre-64 featherweight m-70 in 270, but what fun would that have been? smile Good luck hunting Stever
Posted By: olgrouser Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
To my eyes the "EG" has the classic Savage lines! For my hands though, the rifle is a little heavy to be carrying all day.

Managed to find a very clean 250-3000 that was sold a year eariler as "unfired" for $750.- (an unheard of sum by Canadian standards!) I purchased for less as it was fired and am very pleased to own it. smile

What kills me is when some guys poo-poo the "EG" as commen and plain, then they tell ya how highly they think of their 1929 TD 300 Sav "G"! (Same length of barrel, same lines) wink wink wink
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
That picture is excellent.. Don't ever see a 99F getting the job done like that. Nope.. grin
Posted By: rgr223cal Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
Hey Burt, My 1923 "G" is much more graceful then the "EG" and not the same at all. I know the "G" was upsized at sometime after that because my 1930 "G" is bigger. Do you know when the "G" switched??

Thanks, Mike...

Mike,

Actually, Tomatoe-Joe is probably one of the guys who knows best when these post-transition changes took place. I agree that some of the earlier 250-3000s deluxe models and transition "G"s in smaller calibers seem to have had a slimmer profile than the later guns made in the 1930s.
Posted By: Gene L Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
Well, the only one I have I got recently, but I think the lines are classic. And I love schnable fore-ends. Got a Winchester Model 54, first year production, got that narrow schnable stock on it. Beautiful rifle.
Posted By: TnBigBore Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
I love the looks of the EG as well. I have owned several, but my vote for the best hunting tool is the post WWII 99F. They are much lighter than the EG and seem to balance about as well to me. The 99A Saddle Guns were light and handy, but I cant stand that tang safety and aluminum rotor. If they would have made an F with EG fore end, then we would be talking about the perfect Savage 99.
Posted By: rgr223cal Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/14/07
Thanks Burt. I hope Tomatoe-Joe reads this posting and lends his endless wisdom to us to help shed some light on the sutuation!! My 1923 is a transition rifle for it is still stamped 1899. Also, on page 3-42 of Murrays, you can see the size difference in the illustrations!!

I really like the EG and the way it handles. If I wasn't so hung up on big bore Marlins, I'd collect EGs.
Posted By: kenrh Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/16/07
I think I have an EG, early .308, schnabel fore end, pistol grip, counter. Excellent condition.
Probably going up for sale.
Posted By: Jed 1899 Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/16/07
That would be an EG worth owning...one in a Win caliber.
Posted By: Ron_T Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/16/07
HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!!

Be nice to "Tomato J.."... ah... er... um... I mean "Mad Dog". I was joking with my "stinky feet" remark. They ONLY "smell" a little bit... as long as you stay UP-WIND of him and don't get too close !~!~! grin grin grin

In truth, Joe is a respected, long-standing Member of the Savage Collector's Forum who has a vast knowledge of all things "Model 99"... and he should be respected at all times, even when he makes goofy "tomato-stake" remarks about the highly-valued and most beautiful "EG" models. smile

We gotta cut ol' Joe a little "slack"... he IS gettin' OLDER, don't cha know. And I am sure he regrets making the "tomato-stake" remark at this point since so many of the guys have renamed him due to that umfortunate remark he made. grin grin grin grin grin

Some of us who collect savages try to get the different calibers in the different models, i prefer the pre-mil models ,and i hunt with a Eg 358! I love a few things, but i collect firearms. Don grin

Yah, he's surprisingly bright fer a youngster...:-)
I like most Savage 99's and particuliarly like the pistol grip look and the schnoble forend. I believe both the "EG" and "G" have checkered forends which I like.

I just happened into the "G" for sale at a gunshow last Februrary and would have purchased it if it would have been an "EG".

From what I understand, the "G" is a bit more collectable because it is a takedown.

Well, maybe a dyed in blue collector can tell me a TD "G" is where it's at but for me, give me a solid frame or an "EG" for hunting and shooting in it's stead any time! wink

( I've sold all my take down Savages, end of story! )

Don't have any EG's in the house either, go figure..... cool

Well, I'm kinda partial to 250s and happen to be looking for one for the Young Grouser (who insists he be referred to as Imp99) smile

PM me the details with pics if your willing.

Hey! does it shoot worth a d@mn? wink

But deferring to your expertise, when did the profiles on the "G" seem to change?
Posted By: mad_dog Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/18/07
Sold the G, no room for it. The 250-3000 stays, it's wearing a Boone and shoots alright, not a tack driver but respectable 2" groups, I wouldn't hunt it anyways.
I am mystified as I would have thought that my ultra-light barrel take down "G" could not possibly be an accurate rifle...but to my pleasant surprise, this .300 Savage "G" is more accurate than my Thompson/Encore with a custom barrel from Bullberry. Go figure!

Seriously folks, this rifle is a tack driver.
Posted By: olgrouser Re: Love the EG....who else? - 11/18/07
Been told of one-holers with factory ammo, not saying they can't shoot.

I've had a gunsmith tell me the secret to the 99s accuracy was the barrel not the action.

Me? I just prefer solid frames. smile (shh! we won't talk about cases stretching here)

periscope depth, You just found out our secret, savage rifles are the most accurate lever rifles out there, takedown or solid frame!! Don

This is true .... very true .

That is not hard to do .... hammer guns - whether lever or single shots , have notorously slow lock times ( 5+ milliseconds ). There is alot of things that can happen in that time ....... to put it so you can understand the comparison : rifles like the 99 ( around 2 milliseconds ) will have the bullet in the target before the bullet fired from a hammergun has even started down the barrel ...
When I went looking for my Model 99 it didn't know one model from another. I just bought the one that I thought looked and handled the best. It is a 1940 Model EG in .300 Savage. It is a late 1940 as it has a checkered stock. So the EG is my favorite. It has no rust, no cracks and a perfect bore. The bluing is about 75%. I added a Marble tang sight which I don't really like so I am looking for a Lyman 57SA sight. [Linked Image]
