What are the best scope mounts to use to mount a 3x9-40mm scope to a Savage 99? Currently the 99 I have is a 1950 model and not drilled for mounts. I may keep it that way and buy another (:-) for use with a scope.
Don't drill it, buy another that's drilled and tapped for modern scope mounts and you will feel much better about yourself.

That question can be best answered by asking you a question; "What kind/brand of scope mounts do YOU like?".

I have Redfield/Leupold turn-in bases on some 99s.
I have Weaver bases on some 99s.
I have B&L Balvar bases on some 99s.

On the 99 that I shoot the most, which isn't much, I have a Leupold 2-7x33 mounted in Warne low gloss rings on Weave bases.

+1 on what Mike said.
I really do not have any real preferences. I am looking at a Redfield and a Leupold, both in 3x9-40 and a Leupold in 3x9-50mm. Would I want a one piece or two piece for a 99? I have decided to put a peep on the 99 I have and buy another for hunting with a scope. Not really interested in a quick release.

I'm thinking it's a model EG in 300 Sav, in which case if it has no collector status anymore whats the difference if it's D&T'd for a scope.
Yes, it is a EG or R model; not sure how I tell which or what factory swivels look like. I bought it to shoot and understood it was not a collector item. It is in good shape and I love the schnabel forearm and fine lines to the stock. I like the 300 Sav a lot and am working up loads for it. If I use it to hunt varmits locally and deer out West, I would like to have a scope, hence the reason for the question.
It's not an R if it was made in 1950 or it would be D&T'd already.

At some point somebody said that about every model of 99..

I'd leave it original, or maybe consider putting a peep sight on it. Pick up another one that's already been d&t'd by a smith (lots out there, I sure haven't had a problem finding them), or find a nice 1950's 99F that was factory d&t. Lots of those around.

Thats what I mean. You can't walk into a gunshop without tripping over an EG in 300.

You think I guessed it was an EG in 300 Sav just by luck? They're like arseholes, everybody has one.
How true!

I have a very nice 1899CD in 38-55 that was d&t a Weaver side-mount sometime in the 1950s/1960s. The value probably dropped more than $100 per extra hole, since you don't bump into all that many 1899CDs in 38-55.

Thanks to all for the information.
I've always had the 2 piece Weaver base set on my rifles and have never once has an issue with this set up. The nice thing about the one piece Leupold type base is that you get extra windage adjustment built into the base. I've only ever had one scope that needed extra windage adjustment. I swapped scopes om my sporterized Mauser, and the Weaver 3x to 9x I put on there ran out of windage adjustment. This was a Weaver 2 piece base set also, and I had to go buy a set of windage adjustable rings. Just a thought to keep in mind when you make your purchase.

I like to use the old Leupold model 3 mounts from the 1960s when I can find them. I've got three sets of them on various 99s. The Savage 99 bases are tough to find, and they require the special Model 3 rings, but they are light and rock solid.
Burris Signature Low, Gloss

If you go with a 2-7 or 1-4 then you can apply the Burris Signature SuperLow, Gloss.

Best I have found. They attach Weaver style.
