I have long wanted a Model 99. I recently found a Model G in 300 Savage. The rifle is in excellent condition. The bluing is 90%+ and the wood is not cracked and has only a couple very light handling marks. It is original and is not drilled and tapped for a scope mount. Since I'm not well versed about these fine rifles I need to ask are there any issues with the take-down versions of the 99 that any of you are aware of? Any information appreciated.

My 1923 99G .300 sav. take-down rifle prints 3/8" groups at 50 yards with a tang mounted peep sight...

No problems here...!!!

Just make sure it takes down, if that is a concern.

My 99G shoots very accurately with my 87 grain hand-loads, a little less so with factory 100 gr. This has been discussed on the Savage forum before, and it seems if the rifle hasn't been abused (i.e.: barrel threads lock up nice and tight), it seems not to be a problem. There was even a post on how to "improve" thread lock up if memory serves. One thing my dad noticed years ago while we were sighting in at the range, is the importance of resting the rifle on the receiver or closer part of the forearm (vs. front of the forearm or barrel), as it could cause the point of impact to change minimally.

As Steelhead said, many takedowns have been turned into non-takedowns over the years. Don't forget to open the lever before trying to unscrew the barrel. Silly to mention, I know, but I figure it couldn't hurt to say. There's also a square notch in the underside of the forearm that you can use as a "tool" to mate with the barrels forearm lug, but I don't use mine. Never really tried it, but I'm afraid to damage my 80+ year old forearm. -Tom T

I appreciate the replies. I intend to buy this rifle within the next few weeks. I understand this one was made in 1927. I wanted a 99 that had the rotary magazine and chambered for the 300 or 250 Savage cartridge. I'm a fan of the 300 Savage and have a Remington 81 chambered for the round. I want to put a receiver sight on the 99. Do you have any suggestions as to which one to choose?
