Red,Somewhere here was a picture of the huge whitetail Fred Goodwin shot up in maine in the 50's, he was a winchester collector but hunted with a savage 99.i think jed posted the picture a while ago ,it was a brute. it ws called the silver ridge buck. Don

Don;
I saw that buck on the wall at Fred Goodwin's house.What a monster. He gave me a picture of it laying on his old flatbed truck after he shot it.Had to be 70 years ago, by the looks of the truck ...and Fred. Nice people to talk with; made me stay for lunch and all. Fred is a great person,but I'm sure he could beat me anyday in getting his price on one of his guns and making me feel good about it.
Good memories, Doug

What caliber is Fred's 99?
Posted By: Loggah Re: The Hanson buck - 11/20/09
Rich, Its in 300 savage! Don

And winchesters marketing ploy worked. It turned the 99 into a clip fed critter to keep up with the jones.

Damn what a deer and a grand old deer hunter.

The 88's are actually quite different in operation. Grandpa used one in .308 for many moons. In fact, while digging through an old Red Wing boot box full of family pictures and mementos about a year ago, I found the receipt for when he bought it-1958 if I remember correctly. I'm still a 99 guy, but the 88 does hold a sentimental place in my heart!

At the risk of pissing off the 88'ers I'll stick my neck out and say that the 88 will never be a better gun that the venerable 99. I've had 'em both and there's not much the 88 does better than the 99-including holding it's value.
