Hi Guys, I could use some advice before I go see a gun a fellow wants to sell. My buddy saw it, and here is what he reports. Go ahead and say "UGH!" now and save yourself some time.

He says the gun is in fine condition (one ding on the side of the buttstock)and says Savage 1899 on the receiver (not 99). He also said he thinks it is a pistol grip stock. He says the barrel reads ".410". I asked him what the other barrel said, and he replied, "what other barrel?" UGH! So, what is there is an 1899 missing its rifle barrel but with a .410 barrel. It does have the forearm.

So what an I left with? A gun good for parting out as a barrel & forearm plus a receiver and buttstock? I cannot find where Savage made an 1899 as a single shot shotgun, but I have been known to be wrong many times before. I told my buddy that when he is arranging for me to go see it, to tell the guy to go see if the other barrel is around somewhere. His dad died and left him the guns, and the only one not military was this Savage.

If the gun is in decent shape, say 90%, is it worth $300.00 as it sits? I figure someone would want the barrel/forearm alone for some of that money? Apparently the receiver isn't drilled. I could REALLY use some advice on what to offer the guy. Many thanks, and God Bless, Marc

Savage made the model 99 in a "combo" with a rifle, (in a few calibers), & 410 shotgun barrel. Sounds like the rifle barrel is missing. There some real experts on this site that will give you more information. Can you obtain the serial number located on the bottom of the receiver?

Hi Mac, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was thinking they came in the combo, as that is all I have ever seen. Breaks my heart to think an 1899 lost its barrel. When I see the gun I'll get its serial #. I asked if it said Savage 99 or Savage 1899, and said definitely "1899". God Bless, Marc

The Savage .410 barrels alone sell for $300+ pretty regularly if they're in decent condition. Couldn't offer a guess on the other parts, but if the gun really is 90% you couldn't go wrong at $300.

Did he set a price on the gun? No telling what the gun is, but barrel alone is worth 300 if it's in decent shape.

Serial # and better description of stock, checkering and forearm configuration, barrel length etc., etc, will help determine what the gun is

Duh:

Barrel is a 410: Sorry!

I wouldn't offer anything without seeing some descriptive pictures...or talking to the owner on the phone while rifle was in hand...or both.

I bought a 99 a while back with only a 410 barrel for $300. As others here have stated, $300 is pretty much a minimum for the barrel. Everything else is just gravy.

The 99G and 410 were sold as combo sets, and the 410 barrels were sold as a separate option. So if it's a pistol grip, you probably have a 99G stock/receiver with a 410 barrel (could have been a 410 barrel on any takedown).

Can't say what would be a price.. you'd probably want to letter it to see what the original cartridge is that the internals are for, and then watch and spend a couple hundred to pick up a barrel and hope it fits the rifle correctly. That could take a couple years to find. Meanwhile it'll be a nice single shot 410..

Thank you folks. Once I see this gun I can share more with you. I will definitely be seeing if there is a trunk case and a rifle barrel lurking somewhere in that fellow's house. :-) God Bless, Marc
