My friend's hunt for a model 99

got me wondering about the availability of factory loads for the .358.

Still available, yes?

A second question, is this the beefiest factory load for any of the 99's?

Is he likely to have to pay a premium for a .358 as opposed to the other calibers he mentioned (.243 , .308? )

Thanks,

- Jay
There is only 1 current factory 358 load that I know of, the Winchester/Olin 200 grain ST, which I think is a seasonal production item. AFAIK, neither Federal, nor Remington, have ever loaded the 358.

The ROT for seasonal production ammo is buy all you can afford when you find it, 'cause if you wait, you might not find any. Or, better yet, reload it.

358 ammo = difficult to find & pricy when you do

308 necked up to 358 is easy to do if you handload.

243 and 308 ammunition can be had for a little, or a lot if you pick up the premium loads. Lots of variety, and two of the lower priced cartridges due to the volumes that are sold.
The above advice is very good. Listen to these guys.
You can try buffalo arms ammo or doubletap ammo. They make some loads up. Pricey though.
Reload or find a friend that does. 358 is a very easy cartridge to load for and then ammo is cheap. If I didn't reload, I wouldn't have a 358.
I need a 358. Melvin Forbes will have one when I get ready.
Bolt guns suck! wink grin
I looked at a new condition Winchester model 70 featherweight in 358 thats for sale today !!! grin Don
Winchesters are highly over rated. 99s rule. All others are errata. Even if I do have a DOB 1895 M1894 Winchester rifle in damn fine condition. Even shot a deer with it in '86. grin For what its worth I'd like to have another .358-99 too. Swings like a double barrel shotgun, hits like the Hammer of Thor. grin
try wisconsen cartridge co ,they may have some or may do some up for you,
Saw 4-5 boxs at gun show today 40-45 a box win. silver tips!

These guys make excellent 358 ammo. The spire points shoot awesome in my brush gun. The price is not cheap but very reasonable considering other options.

My first Browning BLR .358 winchester was a 1.25" shooter with factory ammo. Even better with handloads.
Bought proper headstamp Winchester brass and dies from MidWay. No reason to pay inflated prices for loaded ammo.
There is some in Maine, all you would need, let me know

When I found my 358 R a few years back the gun shop had 4 boxes of new 358 Win. 200gr. ST. I bought all 4. I then ran across an ad from MIdway (?) a year later for new unfired 358 Win brass and I bought another 100 cases.
My 358 is a hunting gun, I may shoot it 10 times a year. I think I still have a box or two of the factory stuff (gun hates this stuff) along with this unopened bag of 50 brass along with about two boxes of reloads and the rest of the once fired stuff in a box.
It's out there, keep your eyes open and when you find some buy all of it.
It's a great round and by far much better if you reload.
