Back in the 60's I recall looking at the Savage over under rifle-shotgun combination guns.
Things got in the way and I never did get one.
( military service, family, jobs etc etc)

Do any of you know much about the chamberings offered in
( I think) the model 24?
Quality? Specifications etc?
I'd appreciate any insights from those who know.Jim

Hiya,

Yup, you're thinking of the model 24. They still make 'em as far as I know. (check savage web page under "combo guns"). In the old days, they made the "regular" one, and the "camper's companion" (model C) which was a shorty/backpacker type. I had also wanted one for quite a while, and finally got a '60's vintage 24DL (deluxe) a couple years ago. It's got a chrome/nickel engraved receiver and some checkering. Mine's .20lr/20ga.

Most common calibers seem to be .22mag/20 ga or .22lr/410 ga at least around here. But other calibers were also (and are still?) available. I had to wait for a while for a .22lr/20ga that I wanted to appear.

IMHO, the regular ones are functional, but are pretty "plane jane"... Mine is attractive, but I'm disappointed with the sights. I haven't done anything about it (or shot it much) but I think replacing the front sight with more a rifle type site would probably help.

The earlier ones had a slide button on the side of the receiver for selecting the barrel (mine does)... I've heard they can break, but last time I checked, you could still buy replacement parts. On the newer ones you select the barrel by using a spur on the hammer. The mechanism to break the action was different in different years too.

I used to know more about this (researched it before I bought mine)... others will probably know more.

take care.
Brent, Thanks..The ones I recall handling when my older brother Mike & I looked them over were walnut-checkered stocked with a case colred receiver..Really pretty nice combination rifle-shotguns.
The present vintage 24 F in 12 or 20 gauge with several rifle caliber choices in rimfire or centerfire with the scope mounts, composite stock and a 500+ dollar price tag don't do much for me..:)

I'll have to start looking and see what is out there in the used category with the 60's vintage walnut wood stocked model 24s..
My oldest brother Mike died in the early 70's and he never did get one either..jim
24V is the cf pre-24F version and there are a bunch of pre-24F rf versions.

The 24V seems most common in 222 and 30-30, less common in 223, and uncommon in 22 Hornet, 357 Mag., and 357 Max. All 24Vs had 20 Gauge bottom barrels.

The rimfire 24s (mostly) came in 22 LR or 22 Mag over 410 or 20 Gauge.

Marshall Stanton, the owner(?) of www.beartoothbullets.com, wrote a great Savage 24 article that should answer some of your questions and whet your appetite.

There are some good buys on 24Vs on the auctions. I bought a 24V in 30-30/20 2 years ago for $180 that graded in the mid-90% range. The rimfire style that I would recommend is the 24DL.

Jeff
Jeff, Thanks for the help..This type is the one I would be interested in..jim

I have that configuration in 22 Mag/20 Ga and 22LR/410.

Jeff
Jim, 260Remguy pretty well covered it. Here in Missouri the older rimfire 24's go for $300 - $350 if they are in really good shape. I don't own any centerfire models yet, they are pretty scarce in these parts. Here is another source for info on Savage 24's:

Hi again,

About the one on the auction site linked to above.... I think the "conversion" to a top opening is probably really the removal of the original barrel selector knob (on the side) and maybe conversion to the latter hammer type. (but I can't tell from the pict). Remember I said the slide button ones had a reputation for not being overly robust. Here are some pict's of mine so you can tell what I'm talking about... oh, and as best as I could find out the "C" in the model designation of mine stands for "canadian" not "C" like camper's companion.

Thanks all for the information, the other site on the M24s and the pictures.
Guess I need to do some homework..I may end up with the current 24F 12 as the selection of centerfire cartridges seems a bit broader..but they sure are ugly and seem overpriced at 500+ dollars..jim
None of these are feather-weight guns, but the 12 Gauge 24Fs are really heavy. What cf cartridge are you looking for?

Jeff
Jeff, IF I was to go with the 24F-12 it'd be .223.
Weight shown is a bit over 8#s as I recall..

Weight of firearms for hunting never bothered me a bit..I think the lightest rifle I have for hunting is the Savage 99R..and many of the others are well over 10#s..:)jim
BTW, What do you know about a Savage O/U model 389?
12 gauge UPPER and .308 lower, but a bit nicer quality
( supposedly) than the 24 series combo guns..

There's one at a local shop I may stop by and look at..tho it's also more expensive than the 24 series rifle-shotgun combo..jim
I think that the 389 was the same as a Valmet 412. If you ever think about buying a EAA combo gun, run away from it as fast as you can.

Jeff
Jeff, Neither of those terms is familiar to me..:)
Was the Savage 389 made by Savage?
I'll look at it tomorrow, tho the price quoted seemd a bit steep for a break open O/U..but then, for a ageing farm boy, alot of things seem expensive to me..:) jim
Brent, That's a fine looking 24 you've got there!

I have one of the newer 24V's in .30-30 over 20. Found it at a gun show. The fellow had another one in wood, but wouldn't bargain on it, I wanted it for my brother. It IS heavy, but I love it. I take it elk hunting, when things look to be slow I have both a grouse gun and center fire rifle. The factory sights are not good for old eyes, I put a red dot scope, BSA brand on it, it will print into 2 inches or so at 50 yards. I have loaded spitzer bullets into the .30-30 case, but the .30-30 is really a shorter range gun no matter what. One of the .223's would be good also, but Colorado disallows .22's for big game. A workmake has on of the older ones in .22/.410, broken selector, if he ever remembers to bring it in, I may but it for trading stock.
Hey kennyd,
There have been several selectors and related parts for sale on Ebay lately. I bought one just in case I need it in the future. Buy that broken gun cheap and then find the parts for about $20. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Well, I saw the Savage O/H model 389 today..Nice enough rifle-shotgun combo but didn't move me like the old model 24DL's do..particularly with it's 700.00 pricetag. The .308 barrel beneath the 12 gauge bore was scarcely the size of a barrel for a pellet rifle..not very interesting at all.jim

sav24... thanks. Some day I'll get around to fiddling to make it shoot sweeter.

BTW, Is is customary to delete the pict's after a day or two?... Just wondering if it is considered bad form to leave pict's in a thread... maybe some find it irritating b/c of bandwidth?
