That 1917 definitely has condition. Nice grab.
Posted By: Steelhead Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
I like the pistol, don't know anything about them, but I like it.
Posted By: lovemy99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
I like both... what caliber is the pistol? 32 or 38?
Posted By: Lightfoot Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Nice find on both counts!

Pictures have that pistol looking like a .380 - were you that lucky??
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Nope....32. But I thought I got the scope for a good price @ $40.
Posted By: lovemy99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
you stole the scope!

Nice 1917!
Your new concealed carry gun?

Those Texan scopes are nice: the working man's version of the Lyman Alaskan. Looks like a day well spent.

Don't know anything about 1917s, but it don't take a genius to see that one has a ton of condition.

Nice grab.

Brian
Very Nice
Were you at the Slinger or Peshtigo Show?
Steve
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Peshtigo. Long way to Slinger from here....
Anyone have the manufacture dates by SN?
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Time to buy Brower's book, Brian. grin
Posted By: boltman Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Very nice finds. The pistol looks like a jewel.
Posted By: Skidrow Re: Show find 1917 - 01/08/12
Way cool Brian. Good for you. Next time I'm around back there I'll call to see if you're available to let me have a look see. And to think that my sister-in-law teaches in Peshtigo and didn't tell me about it. grin

Savage 99 has the pistol dates there as well as 99's.

Nice 1917 BTW!
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/09/12
Looks like a late one by SN. Says 1922-1926.
Thanks for the compliments, guys. I really wasn't sure what I was buying. I had never seen a Savage pistol at a show before, and the finish is different from the 1907 I've handled. I almost walked away from it.
There was also an 1950 EG in .300 there wearing a compass in the stock and a Lyman 29 1/2. The Lyman was missing the flip down aperture and the windage had some slop in the dovetailed pieces. I passed @ $450.
Anyone have some 7/8" Weaver rings?
Posted By: gregintenn Re: Show find 1917 - 01/09/12
Congratulations ont the find. I went to a show yesterday, and picked up a 1917 in 380, but not in as good a condition as yours. I also bought a couple of antique pocket knives. I also passed on a very nice pre war R in 300, with a Lyman peep mounted. The guy thought it was a G deluxe.

Brian, I notice that yours has the left grip with the Indian in the logo pointing to the rear of the gun, on others the Indian is pointing to the front; a friend of mine just bought a nice one with that version grip at the OGCA show. I told him I would try to find out the story on the grips, I am not sure which is supposed to be the more scarce version (if either is). Hopefully someone that knows can offer some information.

The duller finish is correct.

Wow Gene, never noticed that before. All the pics in Browers book go the same way as Brians and I went and checked my 1917 380 and the indian is pointed in the opposite direction. I can't find anything in Baileys book that talks about this quirk either.

Mines an earlier model serial 189XXB.
Posted By: GeneB Re: Show find 1917 - 01/09/12
Check page 121 of Brower's book, I just looked through it again. Bailey himself told me about this when I was talking with him at a show - I did not find this out myself.
Posted By: mad_dog Re: Show find 1917 - 01/09/12
Whoops, didn't see that pic.

Mines the opposite, head dress pointed towards the trigger.

Brian, I am pretty sure I have a set of rings you can have if you are not in a hurry....I'll be back home over the weekend.
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/09/12
Nope, not in a hurry. Thanks, Drew!

The "Savage 1917 Model" marking appears only on the second (final) version of the .32 m1917 frame, s/n approx 245000-259472, made 1921-1926, although a few of these ended up being built with .380 slides/barrels and s/n'ed as .380s (there is a high degree of parts interchangability between the .32 and .380).

Hard to tell how many of the earlier .32 m1917 frames ended up with .380 components, since the markings on those frames are exactly the same.

For those without the Carr/Stern/Brower books, in the standard classification of Savage pistols the difference between the first and second versions of the .32 m1917 is the presence of this marking. The difference between the first and second versions of the .380 m1917 is which version of the barrel is used.

Again, for those without the Carr/Stern/Brewer books:

The earlier 1917 grips have the Indian facing forward on the R grip and rearward on the L grip. The later 1917 grips have the Indian facing forward on both grips. The change in grips does not parallel the change from first to second version (ie, 1921) -- second version m1917s have the earlier grips. Neither version is rare. The earlier version is somewhat less common, but seems to be no more valuable.

There are also other m1917 grip variations, including presence or lack of metal escutcheon in the grips for the screws, different metals for the escutcheon (brass or steel), and at least one .32 m1917 (second version) was made with no screw hole at all (in either grips or frame), just the circle on the grips where the hole should be drilled.

Brian-
I have the twin to your Norman-Ford scope. Let me know if you don't want it and I will take it off your hands. It looks really good in a set of 7/8 stith mounts!

well it turns out that I did not end up traveling last night as previously planned and had a chance to dig around this morning, and the rings that I was thinking of were actual 3/4", sorry. Wish I could be of more help but I would have sworn that I had a set of 7/8" rings...
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/10/12
No worries, Drew! I'll come across a set sometime. Or maybe even a set if 7/8" Stiths....
Posted By: lovemy99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/10/12
didn't I just send you a set of 7/8" stiths??? laugh laugh
Posted By: docost99 Re: Show find 1917 - 01/10/12
