Is .308 too powerful for a 99?

Will serial numbers greater than 900,000 be new enough that the action is proper for a .308?

Are there good pre-fitted recoil pads?

Savage came out with 308 caliber in 1955 with the 99R and RS models. Maybe others but that's just off the top of my head. Are you wanting to get an older Savage 99 changed to a 308 caliber or what? Tom.

what do you want to spend... an EG or an R in 308 is easily going to be $1000+ for a nice one... an F would be less but still a decent amount of money... if you go to the post mils the price drops dramatically... but so does the quality.

900,000 serial numbered 99 308's have actions plenty strong enough for caliber.

the "F" 308 did ok here

I've hunted with a 99 in 308 for a while now. First a DL, then a postmil F, and now an EG. Believe me, you won't be disappointed. The DL shot the best but I'm partial to the EG. This is my second year hunting with it, so far 3 deer and 59 hogs. Hard to find an EG in that caliber though

I saw this on Gunbroker but it looks like the forearm is cracked and the barrel looks too new for the receiver

Barrel bluing always outlasts the receiver. Yes, the forearm looks cracked. Still worth the current bid and a reasonable figure beyond.

They do punish a little when shooting off the bench but never felt it when squeezing off on the brown flash.

Bushmaster, Regarding your recoil pad question: I had a 308 Pre-Mil F that belted you pretty well off off of the bench. Never took it hunting, but once sighted in you tend not to notice the recoil wallop in the field.

That double curve butt makes it difficult to put on a recoil pad without nipping off the end of the butt to square it up. I haven't seen a pre-fit.

I have a light Husqvarna 30-06 that will belt you pretty good.
I bought one of the plain leather Butt Cuffs from a fellow out West
and inserted a cheapo, Dollar Store flip-flop sole cut to fit inside. http://www.levergunleather.com/ Looks and works good afield, and I swap it to different guns as I need a longer LOP.

Also, you can buy a stretch-on butt pad, but be willing to receive wisecracks.

Hope this will give you some ideas - but don't cut a 99 stock off for a pad.

I don't have recoil pads on any of my 99s, but I do have them on my slug guns and Encore muzzleloader. The best ones I've found are made by Limbsaver. They are a bit pricey, but it's amazing how they take the punch out of heavy recoiling guns.

I would look for one of their slip-on models, which would allow you to keep the original buttplate intact.

Ditto on the slip-on pad. That's what I use at the bench but leave it off in the field.

Looks like a nice one for the price, a little super glue would take care of that crack.
