This is a quick question and probably one asked a thousand times, so forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse.
My 1952 99EG (factory drilled and tapped) rear sight was missing when I acquired it but it has a Redfield reciever sight. At that time, was it possible to purchase different sights and have them factory installed at purchase and shipped without the rear sight and step? I ask because it would kinda' suck to know that my rifle is 'incomplete' as I don't have the barrel sight. Granted, I'm nitpicking I know but it would be nice to have both so that I could enjoy the option of either or.
Thanks guys! Love my 99!
Kev
I don't believe so.
But original rear sights are not hard to find, but if you installed it, it would make the peep almost unusable.
Thanks Brian. I figured as much with regards to installing the original without removing the Redfield. I enjoy using the Redfield, I just thought that one day I might like giving the original sights a 'shot'. I wish I had more information on who installed the Redfield and what happened to the original but that's not likely to happen on a rifle that's 60 years old.
Thanks again.
The 99F's from the late 1950's had a flip-down rear sight which is pretty handy, but would not be correct for your EG. Let me know if you need help finding an original EG sight. Or contact lightfoot here on the forum. He probably has one.
+1 with Brian. The model 99RS in the 50's came with a Redfield peep, but it was the only model to do so. It's possible that your Redfield was added to the rifle before it ever left the gun shop, but very unlikely it came from the factory that way.

I'd think about finding a blank for the rear sight slot and leave the peep alone.
The peep is a little difficult with my 48 year-old eyes. I'd definitely like to have the option of filling rear slot should I desire to do so. I've also a Lyman 4x All American that's an option as well. I guess it's time to start the search for a rear sight.
Search under the butt plate in the stock bolt recess. Smart owners stash them there so they can find them when they need them.
I have the original EG sight and the folding sight Brian mentioned. Send me a PM if you are interested.
300jimmy- great idea! I searched but alas my search revealed nada. Advice I won't forget though! Thanks.

I'd say 40's Rory, my RS 383XXX has a factory 70LH.
Okay, the model 99RS in the very late 30's, very early 40's, and the 50's. grin
Thats better.

So the folding Lyman rear sight on my 1955 F is factory correct ?

...folding Lyman rear sight...
...as in a Lyman tang sight? No factory tang sight in 1955. No receiver or tang sight offered for a 1955 F.
I think he's talking about the Lyman folding rear sight that showed up in late '60s or early '70s and no, it's not correct on a 1955 gun of any model.
Kevnbro, pictures would really be a huge help here.

It's an open sight that installs in the dove tail slot at the barrel boss.
Right - people usually replaced the semi buckhorn with the fold down so they could install a scope.
