Paid $225 for mine new in 1979. It amazes me what they bring now.

I like the 99F in .358 for forest hunting. I got mine in 1966. I have other rifles chambered for the round.

Steyr Daimler .358 Win.

Went to a gunshow today and saw a very nice 99H 250 and a 99T
250. 99T was drilled and tapped for a scope, and no rear sight,
but looked perfect everywhere else. Also saw a Steyr 257Roberts
on the same table, no 358s though.

A 358 brush gun is about 25% of what a same condition pre mil 358 is.

Was the Steyr nice? The Roberts isn't easy to find.

Looks remarkably like the one I bought in '87 for $275 NIB sitting in the "used" rack at a local dealer. It was born in '77 and hadn't sold so it was put with the used stuff. Came with all the tags, paperwork and box. It has since been hunted. Drops stuff DRT. Has to be the second best cartridge Savage ever chambered the 99 for after the .300 Savage.

2nd best? I guess.

The Steyr was in pretty nice shape, didnt handle it. It was
on the same table as the two 99s that I mentioned. I also saw
a Steyr in 7x57mm awhile back.

The 250-3000 is the darling. The .300 Savage works like a journeyman. The .358 Win is nice but superfluous. The .300 Savage will do anything either of the other cartridges will do. It just won't be as spectacular. Its an excellent tool.

The .300 might be an original Savage caliber, but I'll take my "superfluous" .358 over it any day.

Hey, if you like more bang for your cartridge, and more recoil, go for it. I like my .358 too but all of my .300 Savages do the same job with a lot less drama. In addition, I can buy .300 Savage off the shelf most any place that sells ammo. Been a couple years since I've seen .358 on the shelf. Don't really make me no never mind as I've got plenty of stuff to load .358s but for a fella that doesn't hand load feeding a .358 just might be a problem these days. There's a reason why the .358 was for the most part a "flash in the pan" while the .300 Savage just keeps rolling along. It may not be as popular as it once was but its still there and it still equals the original 30-06 ballistics. Doesn't get much better than that.

Nothing wrong with the .300 Savage, man! I like it myself. Just couldn't let your "superfluous" comment go by on one of my favorite cartridges. I bought 3 boxes of Hornady .358 200 gr.SP at a LGS the other day for $26 a pop. That'll last me a spell with the rest I have stashed, considering its not a gun I take target shooting every week.

Got a custom sako 358win, really like the rifle.
Just gone to the expence of buying a nice 99F in 300 sav from a member here, keep in mind the export costs. That's a fair indication of what I think of the 300sav

As George said, it will most certainly do what the 250 & 358 will, its a special beasty. Now the long wait until it arrives

If I could find boxes of .358 Win for $26 a pop I wouldn't load it myself. As I said above, I haven't seen it out here in a store or at a gun show for quite some time. Last box of Winchester 200gr Silvertips cost me $43 quite some time ago.

George, my birthday falls on the 23rd of april, with luck they should be here by then.

The actual time from leaving the US to touching down here is only around 10 days. But when the aussie dollar was so strong a lot of stuff was ordered from overseas, customs seem to be running about 3 weeks behind arrival.

As for factory boxes of silvertips, the last I saw were at a gunshow probably 10 years ago and were in the collectors area.

I quite agree, which is why I grabbed them up. But I also found it online about the same price. Don't know if its a once a year deal or not, but I suspect so. Heads up to anyone wanting some.

For the most part I agree but when doing woodwork I mostly use a 13oz Plumb finish hammer. Works just fine for pounding 20 penny spikes too. They're hard to find these days. Sorry for the side step.

I'm in your camp. I dabble with the others, but I always come back to the .300 S. My bread and butter of whitetail hunting.

If you are a reloader, it is easy to make 358 out of 308 cases. I do it all the time.

I'd like to go to a gun show with you. I've never found anything like that in the hundreds of shows I've attended.

I haven't seen the 300 Sav. in a LGS shelf for years here. It is a classic though.

Went to a lgs and saw two boxes of Winchester 358. Will go back with the money tomorrow. DIDN'T SEE ANY 300 SAVAGE though!

I have doubts as to that being a "real deal". You don't think they would "fake it" do you?

I recall a pre mil 358f going last year for less than that.

Whoever has one of those late guns for sale would like you to believe they can get that kind of $$.

Not as high, but one had a buy now which stopped higher bids. I believe the sale was legit, especially with the layaway attached to the buynow. You don't often see layaways offered.
