I recall hearing that Eley, the British cartridge maker, early designation for the .303 Savage was the .301. Anyone know more about this - or perhaps have a cartridge stamped thusly?A whole box would be pretty neat <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I read about this quite awhile ago but if I remember savage rifles and and ammo sold in England were marked as .301 as they are simular looking but not interchangable with the .303 British round.

Anyone have (or seen) a Savage rifle that has come back from England and is marked .301 Savage? I suspect that when Arthur Savage was marketing his rifles, he was interested in selling them to every pocket of the world that would buy them. I wonder if those that were exported to England were stamped at .301 Savage here at the factory? Sure would be interesting to know if there was a .301 factory stamp!

IIRC the 303 Savage vs. 301 Savage was reported in COTW.

I believe the 301 SAVAGE headstamps were a British thing. Same cartridge, they just didn't like the name being so close to their 303 Brit.

Puts me in mind of the time a high school buddy pulled up where a bunch of us were hanging out down town and had his .303 Enfield in the car with him and a couple of boxes each of .303 British ammo and .303 Savage ammo. I tried to explain to him, but....

Good one FNG. I had 26 years with UPS when I was finally able to bid on a job in the feeder Dept. I was shifting trailers at night. We had one move only 1 guy was allowed to make. It was blind side backing a 53' trailer in a bay made for a 40', inside the building. I was BS'ing with another shifter when he started cussing. He got the move on his computer to do the blind side back. He pulled his cell out and called dispatch and said he couldn't do it, give the move to someone else. I heard the dispatcher cussing some more and then I heard him say, "Ill give it to the "FNG, see if he can do it". A minute later I got the move. I called up dispatch and said, "I heard you tell PoPo you were giving that to the FNG. I'm #10 seniority out of 140 drivers, you got the wrong FNG and hung up. Don't know who finally made that move?

In our little mountain community resides some "characters". Was sighting in at our little one bench shooting range and witnesses a guy shooting a bubba'd SMLE. Waiting for him to get done I noticed his brass on the ground looked odd. He was shooting 303 Savage ammo in his 303 British. I informed him he was using the wrong ammo. Said he had been using this ammo for years and I did not know what I was talking about. Every so often I would see some of his spent brass laying around. Another range find was the brass of 300 Win Mag. that had been shot in a 300 Weatherby.

I knew a guy that would shoot 44 special ammunition in a single shot 410 shotgun. I would never try that.

In an article on the 303 Savage from a 1987 Hunting magazine entitled Rifles and Cartridges by John Wooters, I quote the following “ and am unaware of any interest in the caliber except in England where I’m told was (is?) called the “301 Savage, to add to the confusion.

Nothing definitive but I believe John Wooters opinion does carry credibility.
