The 7mm-08 is a 7mm bullet (.284") in a necked down .308 cartridge case. A hand-loaded to maximum velocity 7x57mm beats the 7mm-08 a tad in muzzle velocity, but it is not available in a Model 99 Savage rifle.
For about half of the cost of that 7mm-08 you found, you could have either a pre-mil Model 99 in .300 Savage caliber or for a bit more (or even the same price), you would have a wide choice of Model 99s in .308 Winchester.
I would frankly prefer having a Model 99 in .308 Winchester or even .300 Savage as opposed to a 7mm-08 simply because the .300 Savage and the .308 Winchester cartridges have a somewhat larger choice of bullet weights and will stabilize heavier bullets than a 7mm-08 thus making either one of those .30 calibers a better choice for larger game as well as both being exceptionally fine deer cartridges.
By the same token, some fellas (usually collectors) want to have one of each caliber Savage made in the Model 99. But to me, that is the
only reason to choose a 7mm-08 over either of the .30 caliber cartridges available in the Model 99 Savage rifle.
I.E., I don't see any
real advantage in having the 7mm-08 other than to say you own one. Buttttttt... different strokes for different folks, I guess.
