Just got a Bass Pro Shops flier in the mail today. They have a bolt action Savage Stevens for $200 in .270 or 30-06. Good price? Good gun? Comments?
I don't own one yet but I like 'em. Basically the old savage 110 in a pillar bedded synthetic stock. I think they will pretty much run the other manufacturers out of the econo rifle market.

My thinking is buy one for $199 sell the factory barrel and replace it with something out of the mainstream like a 358 winchester, 35 whelen or 338-06.

Best deal in a hunting rifle since you could buy 788 remingtons for $89

Weagle
Haven't heard any bad reports on them. The American Rifleman had a good writeup on them. Very accurate outa the box.
Basically it is the 110 without the accutrigger/
I've heard good things about them, so I'd like one in .243 or .223 for a pick-up predator gun.

The pre-Accutrigger Savage is easy enough to adjust the trigger to a clean, crisp pull. I imagine the 200 is the same setup. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
My friend the gunsmith, who is a Savage stocking dealer, says they are the exact same rifle as a pre-Accutrigger 110. And wasn't he pleased when I told him about the BPS sale (got my flyer yesterday)? He offers them for $300.

Do you think if I bought one from BPS and took it to him for his special trigger job and a scope, that I'd get it back in time for deer season 2006?
