Anyone open to the idea of hosting Savage Fest for 2016?
Thinking about it or talking about it is free! grin

Previous Fests have had a "volunteer host" in Zone 2 and Zone 3. And folks traveled from some of the other Zones to attend too.
(I just made up the zones as a guide possibly being within driving distance.)

I hosted Savage Fest 2014 in Zone 2 and not only was it a success, it was fun to pull together with help from others here at the 'Fire. Plus, I didn't have to travel. smile
Might be nice to move it around some.
Anybody thinking about hosting? Hmmm.....

Love the idea of Zone 1, but let's face it, most of you guys are back east, so it'd be too far to travel.
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/28/16
I could host a zone one. Salmon Idaho. Have it in early Sept. People could buy OTC cow elk tags and hunt with their new purchases.

Oh my....

If only savage sold bows......the same tag is good for either sex archery.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/28/16
Wouldn't that be a hoot?!

I could host one in western Maryland, but y'all would have to settle for squirrels with your .22's!

I am thinking...Savage Fest West....but perhaps better yet..Lever Fest West! We gotta have space on the tables for tube mags and hammers!
Posted By: Loggah Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/28/16
I don;t travel very far with guns anymore !!! :crazy crazy : With assshole states like Mass, and N.Y. im pretty much a Maine,N.H. and Vermont recluse mad

Blasphemy. grin

Lever Fest West. Got a nice ring. Would post mil POS be welcome or heavily maligned?

Gather wood where you may...we all feed the same fire.
Posted By: Skidrow Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Zone one would work for me but I doubt the east coast folks would travel that far. Even though I once traveled to NY for a Fest once they don't seem to want to reciprocate. grin I get that. wink smile
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Well, I'm not so sure about that. Off hour air fare is pretty cheap. I think I might be able to do that. I have family on my Dad's side in Seattle I've never met. Although I've got family in Norway I've never met too, and I'm not rushing off to see them. Now if they have a couple 99's? It might take a little thought, bringing any guns might make it harder, Joe.
Posted By: Phil99 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
The prospect of a western Savage Fest is interesting. To be honest, I would probably be less likely to attend (especially with a trunk full of 99s), but who knows? We have a significant number of members in that part of the country, and it seems only fair that they get their shot to attend one of these great events.

Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Perhaps a program whereby we Easterners who travel to Zone 4 who aren't comfy with transporting a bunch of guns would be gifted a table full of 99s so we don't feel left out? smile
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
That's perfectly reasonable. I'll give you John Angus1895's. So it's settled, we'll see you there.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Salmon, Idaho certainly works for me. Salmon isn't far from Yellowstone. You guys could bring the kids and/or grand kids and do Yellowstone too. My gun show and Summer visitor schedule is a little slack about then so I could probably come over and help put it together. David
Posted By: S99VG Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
I cast a vote for a "Fest of the West." Even if I have to travel back east to Idaho. That wouldn't be hard after all I used to live back east in New Mexico.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Maybe I could talk Gary, and Saddlring into driving out. If we take my TDI Golf, and tag team the driving. I have to think about that. I'd rather fly, Joe.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Yeah, I'd rather fly too. Truth be told, I probably wouldn't show up if it were 2000 miles away. Not much room in my budget for cross-country vacations.
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
You can show my collection gary....better call it the Bubba booth.
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
I can see about using the fairgrounds. There is a very nice rile range in town. It goes to three hundred yards. We could have a turkey shoot there I believe. I can see about hunting also. I know the local guide and some land owners. I have a big hunting cabin with lots of parking in a small town about 50 miles out. LESS than two miles from the bar. If it is small gathering we could have it at the fire hall in leadore I would imagine. I believe the steel head would also be biting then also. Archery season would be in full swing. Later in September there is a craw dad feed. Second week of September gives the most hunting opportunity.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Problem with long trips that have other stuff to offer (fishing, hunting, Yellowstone, hitting gun shops in the northeast, etc) is what to do with the display guns I bring while I'm doing other stuff? Hate dragging them around or leaving them unattended, even if they are locked up in a vehicle.

Northeast has one solution, just have to rent out part of Loggah's vault for the week. grin
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
Yeah, have it at Don's. Good plan.

Posted By: bigolddave Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/29/16
How about more than one regional fest? The timing could be staggered, to make it possible to attend more than one. I can see the Nebraska and Kansas guys going both east and west, or the Illinois and Wisconsin guys, or the Michigan. That way, we could have one within a couple of days, or one really long day drive. Sorry about the Kiwis and Aussies!

Sure was a great weekend. Fest and Jed's wedding.
Posted By: melchung Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/31/16
Any location would work for me but zone 1 -West would be easiest. You don't want to come to Hawaii - freight for guns would be prohibitive and all guns coming into the state have to be registered within so many days. I might be able to take 2 guns to savagefestwest but probably won't since, to me anyway, they are too valuable! Mel
Posted By: RAS Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 01/31/16
Now that I move to Michigan, you guys move it the other way!

Seriously, I really think I am going to try to make it this year but humping a bunch of guns out west might be a little much for me. I just drove most of them 1500 miles from Texas to Michigan. Now that my father just passed, I have more.

If it is too far to travel with my collection, I may just come by myself. That would be a shame because I do have a nice collection of Savages. Some of which you guys already know about, and others that I don't think most of you have ever seen. Maybe only a few of you. Model70man, 6mm250 and Oldgunsmith have seen most or all of them.

Count me in, but if boomsticks need to be included, I am not sure I will have them. Depends on location. Again, I may just come solo.

Note: If it is out west with an over the counter elk tag available, I am going to bring my 99R in 308 and DL in 284 with also enough money for a tag. That is an awesome idea actually.

First weekend in September starts archery season in Montana, but I would show up if there were 99s displayed and or for sale..Just sayin'..
Posted By: 1899guy Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/07/16
What would the requirements be to host one of these? I might be willing to host this if there was enough interest to do it in mid-August in the Wellsboro, PA area. Its a beautiful area, near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, affordable, and while remote, near enough to population dense areas for many of us to drive. Thoughts?
Posted By: crowmagnum Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/07/16
Good idea. Close to the eastern Savage guys to draw a crowd.

Consider the attendance at the fests at Jed's.

Travel through Massachusetts and New York would be a no go with guns.
Posted By: Rick99 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/07/16
Need a secure, gun friendly, heat/cooled building that will hold around 30-35 tables. Time frame Friday afternoon till Sunday noon. Will need tables, chairs, meals brought in works best (an on site kitchen works well). We have found someone to spend the night in the building at past events. A nice motel where we can stay that is not to far from the event. We ask for donations to help with cost but the host will end up eating some cost but they don't have to travel to get there (1600 mile drive for Rory and me).

That will give you a ruff idea. Others that have hosted will probably have some input, as well.
Posted By: cmhjohn Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/07/16
I think the location and time would be good. Should draw some eastern folks. Understand the traveling with guns concerns but they could still bring memorabilia items and paper and set up a table. It is a great opportunity to meet new folks and put a face with the name. Count me in as a supporter. Feel free to PM or call me with any questions about how to get it done. Rick's outline is pretty complete and accurate about what it takes. Only other ingredient necessary is about 4-6 enthusiastic supporters who can come early Friday and help with setup etc.

I am seriously considering doing this. Spoke to somebody a while back, and it sounds doable for me. It really is a beautiful area. Will start looking for a facility. How many days??? Arrive on Friday nights and depart on Sunday afternoon? Is that about right?
Regarding CT and NY states, it is my understanding that as long as you can demonstrate that you are "driving through" the state, to a specific event, guns are not an issue. That should not be difficult to substantiate. For those that don't know the area, Wellsboro, PA is located roughly 3 hours north of Harrisburg, PA, and an hour southwest of Corning, NY, if that helps.

Close. grin
In 2014 we setup at noon Friday with Fest following. Full day Saturday with tear down/clean up on Sunday. Lots to see and talk about.
Do what works for you, but, more time is better.
Posted By: docost99 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/09/16
Looks like about a 15-16 hour drive for me. Probably not going to make it. But I would recommend stopping by the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA on your way. Even if you don't have kids, it's something to see. It doesn't cost anything, and I think the timing might be close.
Posted By: Calhoun Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/09/16
The first 2 Fests were in New York state, can't see where anybody should be too worried about that.
Posted By: Skidrow Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Times have changed since then Rory. Indiana, Ohio and PA may be firearms friendly but don't break down in IL. Worth the extra time to drop down and go through MO through KY and then up. Had a hell of hassle in northern IL a while back when I got pulled over by a stater and he saw a gun case in my back seat. I'm still pulling for a zone 1 Fest but that's because I live on the left coast with a midwest attitude. grin
Posted By: saddlering Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Id try to make a fest in PA if its not in OCT. just depends on my funds at the time, maybe ride down with someone.

Wellsboro is within spitting distance of where I hunted and fly fished for many years. Beautiful country.

It would be like going home for me. Of course I'll go!
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
I know it's been suggested in years past, but why not two Fests- one for the anointed followers back East and one for the unwashed masses out West? Then, every couple years or so have a big one in the middle of the country (I suggest Rick's house at Christmas, or Rory's house on Opening Day.)
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16

Is it decided? PA? If so, count me in. And I will bring some firearms as well. PA is nice country.

Rick: Once we have a place and time for sure, could you post it with a sticky?

Thanks,

"The three men initially had gathered together to exchange knowledge on vintage firearms, in an event officials say they dubbed FestWest. Police say the event sparked widespread alarm as the three revelers left the pavilion where the event was headquartered, and took the "festivities" downtown. One spectator called them, "three dirty old men", as she sought a safer locale away from the celebrants.
Police are still adding to the list of charges as witnesses come forward."

I am willing to do this for mid-August, in the Wellsboro, PA area. Somebody tell me a "Yes" or a "No" on it, so I can get things moving at my end.

I would want:
1) A couple of contacts that have done this before so I don't need to recreate the wheel.
2) Any and all suggestions.
3) A way to know how many will be expected to display, and how many that would attend and not display? Is that possible?
Thanks,

Possible building for Savage Fest?
http://tiogacountyfair.com/rentals-2/building-rentals.html
Posted By: Rick99 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Might I suggest that rather than a East coast and a West coast in the same year that we do one and the other the following year?

If this works I need to know who/where it would be and when. I will then made a new posting and take a pole of who would come and if they would display or just attend.

I've been looking for a location in my town to have one but being a liberal college town a building has not been found that would work.

I have a big party to help work in Aug. so id be a maybe! not sure when tho!
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
I have nothing planned for August. But we need to nail down a date soon so folks can start planning. I daresay any date selected will infringe on someone's plans. The trick is to minimize that.

I'll be happy to come a day or two early and help with setting up and incidental logistics. (It'll be a good excuse to spend some quality time on the Loyalsock chasing trout.)

Bars, restaurants, lodging close by to these fairgrounds? Closest airport? (Harrisburg, and rent a car?) I don't think Williamsport has anything bigger than a grass airstrip?
Posted By: cmhjohn Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
I'm in for PA any weekend in August. Need 2-4 tables.
SUGGESTION; Before we get going to fast here, first thing to do is make sure the fairgrounds controlling authority is gun friendly! Since local politics is involved I doubt anything will be unanimous but can't overstate the importance of a clear understanding (in writing would be good) that we would be welcome. My experience was there will be a lot of questions about who coming and what type of firearms will be there, will sales be allowed, and on and on. Be prepared for this and be cool but totally honest.
Posted By: Rick99 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Yes, what John said. It is a gathering of Savage collectors to "show and tell". It is not an "open to the public" gun show. No partying on site...but we do like to eat. grin
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
I can probably come up a day or two early also. If Gary could put up with me that long we could carpool. The only 99 I'd like to share is the Malcolm scoped 22HP, so if I could rent one corner of someone else's table, I'm good to go, Joe.
Posted By: 1899guy Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
The best nearby airports are:
Williamsport, PA 1 hour away, nice local airport. Not a grass strip.
If you don't mind going through NY state, Elmira, NY is about 1 hour north, about the same size as Williamsport airport.
Biggest and best is Rochester, NY, 3 hours north, and 4-lane hwy most of the way to Wellsboro, but its in NY. Those are the options. No need to go to Harrisburg, as its not much bigger than Williamsport, functionally.

I will connect with the Whitneyville fairgrounds people. There may be other options available. Can anybody give me a rough idea of the dimensions of a space we will need? X feet by X feet for example?
This is all good, and any and all help (offers to show up early, etc) would be much appreciated.

I like the idea of west one year and east the next, or midwest on an odd year. That way we all get a chance every year or 2 or 3. PA or ID is long way for me but as long as there is a FEST somewhere there is always a chance! And August usually works best. September in ID does offer some other options.....
Posted By: JeffG Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Very Generous offer Bob, Thanks! I have a better shot at making early August than anything later.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: Savage Fest 2016 - 02/10/16
Looks like July 23 and 24 would be the only time I could attend in Pennsylvania. I'll be at the Ohio Gun Collectors the weekend before and can come on over to Pa the next weekend. I can't make two long trips that close together. You guys will probably already have your books by then anyway. August is out anyway since I'll have relatives visiting then.

Rochester, NY is a better and closer airport. Lower fares. Elmira, NY is only 1 hour away, as is Williamsport, PA if you want to avoid any NY handgun issues. All that said, yes, you can fly to Ithica.
Thanks everybody!

If you haven't already, be sure to go to the "official" Fest thread and chime in whether or not you/others can attend and whether or not you'll need tables. Preliminary head counts help with planning and will likely change, but it's a good starting point.

I have had all sorts of problems making a post here lately. Had to go to firefox, now it seems to be functioning.

Place is airconditioned!!!!!

Lots of tables.

Lots of food. I was told (this is my first Savagefest to attend much less host) to have "one big meal each day". I will do a bit more than that. Anyone who is hungry beyond that can walk 250' to the McDonalds in the back yard.

To find the place, just find the only McDonalds in Wellsboro. We are in their backyard. I will remove the chain from the driveway at 8am Friday morning, so anyone can drive in from there, or also from the street behind.

If anyone wants to help me do some cleanup on Sunday morning it will be much appreciated.

The place is fully furnished with refrigeration in the form of refrigeratiors, freezers, griddles, eating utensils, and all we could need.

If anyone wants to camp there with a camper or a tent, feel free. There is 120 elec to hook up to, just bring an extension cord.

If anyone needs me my cell is 585-739-2104.

Really looking forward to meeting you all.

Really looking forward to this!

Bob

Bob:

Thank you in advance for taking this on. It's a lot to do. My wife and I will see you tomorrow around zero dark thirty. Or between 8 and 9 AM with any luck.
