Many years ago I came across a Savage M1899 .303 that had a barrel threaded for a Maxim Suppressor. It had a knurled end cap and the original box that the supressor came in. If I remember correctly the supressor box was dated 1914.Have any of you gentleman run across anything like this? No, I do not have the rifle due to at the time not having the funds to go thru the BATF papework and buy the rifle at the same time.

Fug's 1895 carbine and an 1899H 22 H-P I saw in Jerry's pawn shop in Ocala, Fl. a few years ago. I don't know if they were for a Maxim suppressor but the muzzles were threaded and had a knurled brass cap to protect the threads.

Almost bought an early 1899H in 30-30 at Tulsa a year or so ago that had been threaded for a suppressor. Lot of mirror blue remaining, but extra holes on the side kept me and the seller a tad bit apart on the price.

I've got a M99 barrel that's not presently on a rifle with the knurled cap.

Is this it? I considered buying it, but the ATF hurdle was too steep for my weak knees.

1756, only the suppressor needs a tax stamp. A threaded brl. does not unless it is shorter than 16".

I'm not sure what the ATF would say about a non-registered Maxim. I guess hey would either register it or come and get it...don't know which.

That looks pretty close to the one I saw. The fellow didn't want to split up the rifle and the Maxim so I passed.

From several inquires a few years ago to BATF agents and dealers only new manufacture suppressors can be registered, vintage ones that were never registered, or where the registration has elapsed due to a break in registered ownership, are almost impossible to re-register. I have heard of at least one that may have been, but I have not been able to find anyone who could do it, or anyway it could be done. I had asked these questions regarding suppressors that were legally registered back when registration was first required, but the registration was allowed to lapse when an owner died and none of the heirs got it transferred. What was once legal now is illegal with apparently no way to reverse that. I think the ones I had heard about have since been destroyed.

I have a few 22's that are set up for suppressors, one certainly for a Maxim but others came from England and may have used Parker-Hale's. I had wanted to do a cut away for display which would have rendered the suppressor inoperable but apparently by law they must be completely destroyed. Everyone I asked gave me slightly different interpretations of the law and I don't know who was really right, if anyone, I just gave up the idea as not worth hassle or risk.

I have literature on the specification for threading for Maxim's, I found it interesting that all sizes used 20 threads per inch starting with the smallest of ½"-20 used on 22 caliber which is a standard fine thread, .25 to .35 caliber used 9/16"-20, .38 to .40 caliber .614"-20 and 44 to 45 11/16"-20.

Most American suppressors use a 24 or 28 thread. You would have to have an adaptor made to use on a Maxim threaded brl. Humm...that's very doable. Not sure if you could run a .227 bullet through a .223 can (probably can) and would need to check the original Maxim threading for trueness.

This sounds like another money pit that I don't need to be thinking about.
