Lots of small gun shops in Western Pennsylvania. I have the tendancy to stop at them a lot looking for treasures. Most of the owners know I collect 99's and will give me a call when they get one in. A shop owner called me this week and told me he had a really nice "G" and wanted a thousand dollars for it. I figured it was just another overpriced 99 and almost didn't go take a look at it. Well guess who's a thousand dollars poorer today. It's a 1922 (first year of production) "G" unmolested in at least 75 or 80 percent condition. And get this.
Came with the original box and paperwork. Even came with a wooden cleaning rod that may have came with the rifle originally. I figured I'll never get another chance for something like this, so I spent the cash.

Heckuva nice rifle with the box/paper adder.
You did well.
Very cool!!!

I would have done the same thing...... cool
Wow - what a find!! Glad it's got a home with a Campfire Savage Loonie!
Yeah what Lightfoot said! Heckava find Joe. Thank for posting.
Wow !!! Great find.
Very nice one. You do know that 90 percent of all 99's made are in PA. The two I bought last week came from Parkesburg, PA, Joe.
That's a beauty alright. Don't find many 99's here in Kentucky.
Beauty!! Wow!!
Very nice! I would have brought it home too!
Yes!

We have a WINNER!!!

[good grab - green with envy! sick ]
Extremely nice!! What a great find with the box and papers. I don't blame you a bit.

Steve
Now that's a find for sure! Congratulations.
If it's only 75-80%, you're a great photographer. It looks near new in the pictures.
Awesome!!
Very nice "G", maybe you can find a nicer box to put it in. GW wink grin
Beautiful. I think finding the box is just as exciting as the rifle. Nice find.
Not fair! You already had too many! I know, I saw all yours at savage fest. That's a beauty and the box and papers to boot. I hope you didn't hurt your arm whipping out the cash.
Great find!
Wanted to ask how many of you guys are retired? I can't find time to go to any shops or shows anymore. I need to hit the lottery or have a jet engine hit my house if I'm going to scour the field for these kind of finds!
I'm retired, but after the last two months, I might have to go back to work, I'm bout broke, Joe.
Buying more lottery tickets than 99s. wink
Nice one Joe. I need to start following you around and then get ahead of you!

Dale
That's a keeper for sure. Nice find.
Homerun.

Nice rifle sir. When I hit the gun shops in PENN I find some
very nice rifles also.
Great find! Take good care of the box. It will soon be 100 years old. Is there a serial number penciled anywhere? Not many boxes left around from that period and it is in great shape!

I would like to add the serial to my data...post or PM, please.

Yes, yes! I'm not seeing the missing 20% at all!!
That's the kind of find that we all dream of. Congrats!
Very Nice, I would have spent the money also.
Oh man, is that nice. Had to wipe the drool off my keyboard.

Interesting that on the label the G is referred to as STYLE and the Model is still listed as 1899. Savage must have been using up the old pre-printed labels; but the STYLE nomenclature is interesting for denoting the G.
They were anything but consistent in their use of "model" at that time..
Nice find. Congrats

Yes Rick, the serial number is written in pencil on top of the box. 2430XX. I'll PM you the full number. The original owner's name and address is also written on the paper work. He was from the Pittsburgh area. The guy who brought this into the shop said he inherited it from his uncle, who bought it new. He told me he never hunted so it sat in his closet for over thirty years. I'd like to get it lettered to see where it was shipped.

I feel real lucky to have gotten this rifle. The shop owner had it in the shop for almost a week before I got to see it. He told me three other guys looked at it with interest, but all passed on it or told him they'd let him know later. He told them he was selling it to the first guy to come up with the cash. I didn't even hesitate. smile

In the box that came with this rifle was this wooden cleaning rod. It's not very straight anymore, and was repaired at the end. Does anyone know if any Savage rifles came with a cleaning rod? Could this be from the Savage factory?

plus its a .300! hunt the heck out of it! nice.
i woulda and i am married to a Scot's woman. cold nights be damned!
I have not seen a cleaning rod that could be identified as Savage. I'm thinking yours might be home-made.
Very Cool. It seemed the factory labeled not only their model 99 rifles with Model 1899 but their boxes and literature were also mislabled Model 1899.Silly Savage must not have read Murray's book.
Sure hate to see other people realizing my fantasies! Great find and good luck with it.
Funny how much a little cardboard enhances the value of a gun, well bought Joe....
