I just got my 2nd 99 , i already had a 99 F in .308 And that is a great hunting rifle.
I just added a well used EG also in .308. I know EG,s in 300 savage are all over. But an EG in .308 is one i can't remember seeling before...tj3006
That's a nice pickup tj, they aren't all that common. I don't know that I'd call them rare though. Others may have a better insight on that question.
Only made four years IIRC, maybe three if you consider 1960 may not have had any made. I recently found one myself. Not that common to come across.
Pretty uncommon, the featherweight 99F was outselling the EG in 308 in those years pretty heavily. Nice grab!
Well all you need now is a Model R in 308 to complete your set of pre-mil models in 308..then go for 243 and 358!!

Don't listen to this Jeff guy, he's setting you up for craziness!
I have a 99EG in 308 and really like it. I look for them and they really are not seen much. I have only ever seen 2, and I bought the first one I ever saw.

Buy all you can find!! I've not seen a R in 308 or 358. North Carolina is not a hot bed for 99's.

Not sure now which one is the 308 and which is the 243. I'll make some new pictures when it stops raining, probably Wednesday and will post.

Steve
All of the pre-mil .308's were made in the 900,000 serial range, about 68,000. Most were F's. The .308 was the more common of the EG's with maybe 5000 or less(?) made. Just my guess from data collected.
Rick, then why don't we see more of them, with the EG style stocks?
Their out there.Had 4,came and went.
1 in 200, not a lot. Popular rifle to own and not sell.

Who here has a .308 EG?

Who has a .308 R?

Who has a .308 F (pre-mil, only)?

I have a .308 EG and F, no R.
Bought this one unfired for $450.Think I sold it for $900.Don't want to have anything to do with a 99 in 308.Believe it or not I'd rather shoot my F's in 358. [img:center][Linked Image][/img]
I have an EG in .308. (And a .243. Sold my .358.)
What we own versus what was made isn't necessarily representative.

I've owned a 99RS in 308 but never a 99EG in 308, that doesn't mean the RS's are more common. I've passed on several 99EG's in 308 because they just don't thrill me for the money they wanted. And I've owned 4 or so premil 99F's in 308, but have seen so many I couldn't begin to guess how many there were.

A guy would have to watch the auctions for a couple of years and record everything that went by and then give an educated guess - and even then it may not be representative. Jmo..
I have a couple in 308,1 in 243,and 1 in 358. I have yet to find any "R"s around here in Winchester calibers.
2 EGs in 308, 1 in 358
I have one EG and 3 Fs, no R
Two 308F, one 243F, one 308EG, one 358R, one 243R...I can't seem to get a complete set of any model.. wink
A few F's in 243, 308, 358, no R's in Winchester cartridges, EG in 308. F's are by far the easiest, R's the hardest IMO. Postmil F in 284 doesn't count.
Well it i guess is not all that common. But not to rare either. It sure looks like a shooter. I put some old hand loads through her and got some very good groups.
Thanks for all the info ! ...tj3006
"What we own versus what was made isn't necessarily representative."

Not trying to prove the number produced, just wanted to show that they are out there. I think the response gives an idea of how common the EG is in reference to the other models.

I have one EG in 308 and three pre-mil F's in 308. I killed an elk with the EG last season. I'm really fond of EG's and have one in every caliber except 243. Hopefully I'll get a nice royalty check for my book pretty soon and will be able to add the 243 to the collection. David
yes, I hope that your scholarly efforts with the 99 prove quite fruitful! But now I'm kicking myself in the butt for passing on the 1950s Fs in .243 and .358 I came across years ago - and I won't mention the EG in .308 that got away from me in a pawn shop up in Redding back in the 90s. Arghh...
EG and pre mil F in 358. R and pre mil F in 308.
I have a 308R and a 358R along with the other post war calibers except a 243. Only have seen 2 for sale, one was in fair condition and other one highly collectable but out of my price range.
I have EG's in 308 and 243..Also have an F in 308....
The 243 in 95% or better are hard to find here are a few in the gun room 1-243R,1-308R,2-308RS,2-358RS,1-243EG-5-308EG

3-358EG,-2-243F,-6-308F,-4-358F this does not count the new in

the box stuff a few 30-30 slipped in after the war to.
I think the last few guys have shown they exist... grin
