Looking at this rifle for sale at a price around $550. Does anyone have experience with this rifle? Please hurry, going tomorrow to look or buy. Thanks, Keith
Not an H, either an F, R or an EG.

Any of those three made in 56 in 308 is a steal at $550 if it's got condition.
So what is wrong with the H model? Made in MA in 1956.
The H was discontinued decades earlier.

Listen to what mad dog posted.
According to Savage, the H was still made in 1956 and not decades earlier. Made in Fairfield, MA according to serial number. The H stands for 1956 made. Look up Savage mfg. dates. Thanks for your opinion, however.
You are wrong - and that's not an opinion.

Just where are you getting this info??

Are you talking about the lever boss date code?

That is not a model designation.
Spiritwest, hands across the water mate. Listen to both the members above and all will be well.

Johno
Right off the savage mfg. date website.http://www.savage99.com/dates.htm
Look it up, just put in savage dates of mfg. and the letter H indicates date of mfg. So tell me this is wrong or savage dates are incorrect.
You asked about a 99H made in 1956. The date code is not the model designator.

Do you know anything about actual model differences?

You can learn something here if you don't act like an arrogant prick.
H is a date code that was on an inspectors stamp. The only models made in 1956 were those mentioned above.

99EG has a thin forearm with schnabel end. The 99F has a raised boss at the rear sight, 22" barrel and will have 99F stamped on the barrel. The 99R has a fat and wide forearm with rounded end and 24" barrel.

Welcome to the campfire. The fact Savages are confusing is why we are here. grin
An arrogant prick, you say. You must be from CA, [bleep]. You don't know me and your a stupid jerk. Don't need any info from you so go kiss Jerry Browns ass.
Thanks for your input. You are a gentleman not like the others on this website. Perhaps the owner gave me the wrong letter. Will know tomorrow.
Trolls aren't welcome here. GFY!
Somebody needs a nap.
Somebody needs a brain.
Then what the hell are you doing on this site, butt head? I probably got the wrong info over the phone from the seller and this has led to this? I will get the right info when I see the rifle again and learn about what I was asking. In the meantime, go to Hell. I do not need anything from an ignoramus outfitter like you. There are other websites who don't conform to pinheads.
You started it with the arrogant prick response. Truth hurts I guess...

G'night troll.
Idiots abound. If only there was a use for them. Just another stupid outfitter moron who has sat on his brain (peanut size) around drinking beer and talking horns. You paste so much on this site you must not have anything better to do. Get a life, imbecile!
You first posted here an ignorant man seeking knowledge. Several people tried to educate you and you decided to pick a fight with one of them because you apparently didn't like what you were hearing. You can learn here or you can continue to be an arrogant ass. Your choice.
Pull your fingers out of your ears and listen. The "H" is a DATE code, NOT a model number. In 1956 there were 3 models available, an EG, an F and an R, they all had an "H" stamped on them, because the "H" is a DATE code, NOT a model. Your info was correct it has an "H" date code. You have to tell us what it LOOKS like to find out the MODEL. Remember "H" is DATE only. The "H" in the little oval has nothing to do with model, it's a DATE stamp. Savage started the DATE code in 1949 with "A", 50-"B", 51-"C", etc.

You said you looked up the DATE on the SAVAGE DATE site. Then you started calling the DATE the Model.

So, take this piece of chalk and write on the chalk board, "A=1949, B=1950, C=1951, and these are DATES", 100 times. When you are done we will give you a new piece of chalk and start on the MODELS.

A 308 in any of the three models available with condition would be a good deal. I'm not sure if the EG was drilled and tapped by the factory for a scope. But if all other conditions were good, I'd go for it. Good luck and welcome to the site, Joe.
I don't post much, but I'm on this site most days. It's a community---full of idiots, egotists, humorists, you name it.However ,I've learned that the collective brain power here is awesome ! I've taught myself to keep my mouth shut and believe (word for word ) what the majority tell me.If it's in doubt they'll banter it back and forth and come up with an answer you might not want to hear, but sometimes the truth hurts.Someone here told me my 99E in 22HP didn't have enough condition to be worth $2000---- I've got to go cry now.
Wow, if the OP would have just taken my reply as gospel this would have been a short thread.
He didn't come here to learn anything.

He came here to pick a fight.

Another internet troll making the rounds.
Funny $hit right there!

So I've heard.
OP had 4 "gentle answers" from experts.
Lightfoot was right to call him out.
some of us comming on here looking for answers lurk for a while and start to learn the depth of knowledge here they ask questions and respond with thanks . Others have come on all blustry with supposed knowledge and dont put brain in gear befor hitting the keyboard,, if you are going to ask a QUESTION PLEASE LISTEN to the answer .

we are a good bunch on this forum with more knowledge of Savage lever action rifles than any other that i have found , if you come to a COLLECTOR FORUM be quite and listen.

Searching the internet to try to educate yourself is a good thing.

Trying to correct people who have been collecting and gathering information for decades each is a silly thing.

But it's understandable. He doesn't know us. The information he was believing isn't any worse that information you might get from any gun store or dealers at gun shows. Had a Cabela's library guy try to tell me than an EG with a Redfield 70 was an RS, even though he had a copy of Murray's on the shelf 3 feet away.
[/quote]A gentle answer turns away wrath. So I've heard. [/quote]

Sooooo.....what do you do with the OP? No sainthood for him.

He is a jerk, no matter where he comes from.

His own post told him H is a date code. Didn't read or understand his own post apparently.
I think its worth looking at Klondike mikes post asking for help on R or RS. He posted claerly and took the advice offered with courtesy.

As has been said old mate was given the correct info but spat the dummy

Someone called me stupid once. I didn't cry and call him four letter words. I asked what I did stupid. He told me. Now I don't do that stupid thing anymore. I've got enough other stupid stuff to claim, Joe.
I'm still wondering how he or the seller got the info so mixed up...99H (pre-WWII); 1956 .308; made in MA (post 1960); looked up the serial on Savage99.com (I don't think Ken lists serial numbers past 1950)! crazy It would be interesting to see the rifle. Original or a Johnny Cash "One piece at a Time". smile

savage99.com now has the date codes. Though the Fairfield, MA comment did confuse the heck out of me.. figured I'd not delve into that one tho.
Guess I should pop over there and see what is knew. He has a nice site. His info helped me when I was getting starting.
Well, hasn't this been fun. Found out the the Savage 99 I was looking at was marked M in 308. Bought the gun and put 8 rounds within an inch of each other at 100 yards. Put a new Leupold 3X9 scope on today and will expect better shots. So glad for all the negative comments by [bleep] associated with this site. And as for Lightfoot, I would love to meet you face to face and show you what us Army Rangers can do a [bleep] like you in seconds. You are a disgrace to this website and a prick of a human being. Where do you live, jerk, and perhaps we can arrange a meeting. After your ignorant response I will leave this website...have found many more informative and not filled with redneck jerks like you. Have a nice day, moron. And to all those supporters, thank you. One simple question involved nothing but inflammatory responses. As if you people are experts? Found more information elsewhere without the disgusting comments from most of this sites subscribers. Good riddance and hopefully you agree.
Bad night Root
Well I a former army tanker, so I am fat and out of shape So you can come to a Idaho and kick my ass also.. But I stand firmly in Lightfoots camp. So GFY ........maybe a model H is what you need as in Hemmaroid. Lightfoot has been nothing but a treasure and great friends of mine on this sight.
Found more information elsewhere, when he was given all the information he asked for here.

But he found an M on it, so all is well. He's got himself a 99M!! grin

Let's not spoil his newfound confidence, guys.
Talk is cheap, especially on the internet. Whiskey costs money. So far all you've shown us is that if brains were gunpowder you couldn't blow your nose. Good night Larry.
What a douchebag. I guess they teach disrespect, dishonor, and disparaging in Army Ranger school it would seem. He is a sad representative of those fine folks, and if I were one of them I would disown his being associated with me.

Probably wanders from site to site on the internet looking for friends and comes up short everywhere he goes. The nerve of coming here and behaving the way he did- it's like walking into a bar filled with old retired guys and picking a fight because of his hubris.
I remember a time of knowing NOTHING about Savage 99's. Loving them, but having no knowledge of them. I did internet searches and wound up here. I also wound up over there, and elsewhere. There's lots of information out there and until you assimilate all of it (that my little brain can hold) it can be confusing. I had to ask what an EG was!

I remember wondering which piece of conflicting information was right. Which website had the right answer. It wasn't long ago believe me. So, while an ass showed himself, I sure can remember going thru some of the same experiences, and as I said, not that long ago. You boys really got me educated, and I was lucky to land here. The OP could learn everything he needs about Savages if he could set aside some pride and take a seat. You guys are for the most part patient and willing to teach. Too bad he didn't get that.

To the OP, if you'd accept a little humility, I'm sure you would be forgiven and accepted, as I have been (at least forgiven if not accepted). Good group of people, and I dare say especially Lightfoot has been helpful in my own upbringing.
Doesn't anyone recognize this guy??

He's been here dozens of times. New name - same BS!

+1
I don't think he likes you Mike?

He's got it all under control now anyways, he's got a 1956 DL, must have RD stamped on it as well.
I knew nothing about 99s when i came here in 2007, but for a guy i knew that hunted with a 308 "C" that I thought was Junk! then I saw a fancy 22HP at a gun show that sparked my intrest. I have learned a Ton from guys Like Mike, Joe Loggah LBK, Fug ect. Read and Learn, if you dont like this sight then Leave!
I added a "Larry Root?" identifier to the original header.
How old is the original poster? I was an Army Ranger and I will kick your butt?! A junior high mentality if there ever was one.

I have a great friend that served for 24 years in the Army and was a Ranger. I never heard him tell anyone he was a Ranger, he never threatened anyone and he really could kick your butt.

Insecurity sure leads people to act like internet commandos.

You guys were played.
No Fairfield MA BTW
Real Army Rangers don't identify themselves and make internet "kick your ass" threats.

You don't know they are Rangers until after they F you up...

This guy is a clearly a POSER and a douchebag, as previously noted.
