The guy at gun library said there is a little room on this gun. Though, it is still 50 miles from me to get it. What can you tell me about it? Age? Any difference with the guys compared to the 29A? If different, is it an improvement and why?

If it goes because of this post, I will survive. If I am motivated Thursday, I might take a ride if it is still available.

I would drive over there, with GeneB on speed dial. Looks very nice in the pic. My nice 29A cost me $350, but I don't know if it was a deal or not.

Last of the 29's...looks like a grooved receiver and might be why it is missing the rear sight. Sight is no problem finding. Great condition, hard to find much better.

It's the last version of the 29B, which was the last of the 29's. Compared to 29A's, 29B's are not drilled & tapped for a tang sight and have two tone receivers with the trigger guard part having a duller, almost matte blue that was not as durable as the blue on the rest of the gun. This one has a blued slide arm which was started 1952~1953 and the blue on these started wearing off from the first cycle of the action, this one show most worn off the part of the arm that enters the receiver - all Savage slide actions prior to this had the slide arms left 'in the white'. Grooved receivers started late 1954 and will not accept some mounts very well due to the short length of the grooves. I would check the grooves for possible damage from a poor fitting scope mount.

Did you you end up making the drive and purchasing the 29B?

Newb 29B owner myself. I've had one for a couple weeks now. About the only thing that I can add to the thread is that the 29B is a CRF only mechanism. Tossing a round into the ejection port and attempting to close the bolt on it will result in a jam.

So far, I've been impressed. My 29B is 'tin can accurate' at 50 yds freestyling with iron sights. No FTFeed, FTFire or FTejects in nearly a brick of LR when tube fed. A box of 50 shorts went likewise. It is more than 'tin can accurate' on bags but that is not the niche it was designed for.
