Up until now, I did not know that the 1899H came in a solid frame version. The way I found out is I just acquired an 1899H in 303. 20 inch barrel. I need to post some pics of it because I have a few questions on it. If somebody wants to post pictures of it, send me an email address or text number. I am not there yet on the new system. Though I will get there.

Thanks for the tip. I wanted to ask if that little cut out in the forearm where it meets the receiver ring is factory. The one in your book has the same cut out. It makes sense since the takedown metal portion of the forearm is not there.

Speaking of 1899Hs. I was at a little gun show in Beckeley, WV with a forum member here about 4 years ago and came across a really nice 1899H TD in 25-35. All original with zero modifications. Also had a Marbles peep sight. Granted, the member I was with was a lot more of a Winchester guy. I let the gun down, and came back later in the day to buy it for $800,..... and it was gone. There is another different forum member here (Savage) that reminds me of that egregious error on a monthly basis! Lol

A 25-35 carbine is still on the wish list. F, H, SRC… why I could even be happy with an "A" Short Rifle.

I just got a 303 H. Ain't got her going yet. Solid frame.

The TD option was added at around 70,000 but I don't think the TD H was anymore common that other models with the TD option,. Then the .22HP was added and it was only produced in the TD H version. Being a big seller, after that it makes the TD H the most common version. Even for a short time after WWI, Savage opted to produce the H in only the TD version which became the more common 99-F with fewer of the 99-E's (solid frame) produced.

The vast majority of 1899Hs that I have seen were TDs. These include all calibers.

I have only seen one solid frame 22HP in my life and it was that dumpy one at Cabelas in Dundee.

Even a dumpy solid frame 22hp would have gotten my attention

Some one please post an image of Doug's solid frame 22HP in a "T" to pop a few eyeballs.

I rember back in 07 I belive, we were at Jeds for the 1st Fest, and Doug brought that fine rifle out, and let us handle it! one of the best savage 99s Iv ever held!

Never thought much about the 1899H's until I picked one up at a Fest. Oh my gosh, those are beautifully lightweight and handy little rifles! You're gonna love it.

In my 3rd and 4th picture, notice the little cutouts in the wood. At first, I thought that was a chip missing but after receiving the gun and closer inspection, I noticed it is required from the factory for the forearm to fit. This is the same as the solid frame 1899H located in David's book.

I usually see those cutouts on rifles whose wood has been refinished, Rick has even commented on it to me. Don't know why it was so popular. I'll have to look in David's book when I get home, maybe it's not just on refinished rifles.

I got a couple in 25-35. one is rough,the other is not !

Don't see many 1899-H's in that condition.

RAS, if you are referring to the little step down area at the top and rear of the forearm it is a missing piece of wood. The wood is very thin there and tends to brake.
