I have a 99c with a copper colored savage emblem in the butt stock. Does this have any bearing on the value? I’m no savage expert, but it’s the only one I’ve ever seen.

1976 model. I have one in 250, what's yours?

I've got a Savage orange with the same emblem.

Your rifle is a 1976 99 CD (not a C). The CD was cataloged 1975 through 1980 according to Murray. The 1975 model had no Savage identification other than the barrel address. The 1976 model has the Savage medallion in the buttstock. For 1977 through 1980 the Savage medallion was moved to the grip cap. I believe the CD will be valued higher than a comparable C. Whether the one year 1976 variation commands a premium, I have no idea.

I have a savage model 99. Chambered in .250/3000 It was sold to me for 20 bucks by the old man I used to hunt with. I am just curious as to what year it was produced and which model it is.
The boss code is pretty worn but it looks like a 20B in a circle. It has checkering on the fore grip and a brass shell counter. Serial number - 7117##. Any help would be great!

20 bucks? He liked you a lot.

If it's 20B it's 1950 and is either a 99Eg (slender schnable tipped fore end) or a 99R big full wood (perfect for clubbing seals and such)

711,7xx would be 1953 or 1954 (I go with 1954) by serial number. And, yep.. E or F.

Must be an E or F. They are often faint or even unreadable. David
Posted By: RMAC Re: 99c ? - 01/02/18
Well, I just saw your responses. And after further review by my wifes eyes it is in fact a circle with a 20E, not B. I appreciate the input.
So it is a model E made in 1953-1954.
Thanks for the help. Now I just need to figure out if the gun is shot out or needs specific ammo. I have shot remington 100 grain ammo but it isn't very accurate. I have read that the 250/3000 might need ammo in the 80s-90s grain to stabilize with the twist rate. Anybody have a similar gun that loves a certain type of ammo?

Now I found the below paragraph on a savage site in reference to Model 99E. My gun has a brass shell counter and checkering on the schnabel forearm. In the paragraph below it saws no checkering or cartridge counter. So whats the deal?

"The model 99E, the “economy” version of the 99. Some came with birch stock sets which in my eyes made them very ugly guns. The gun did not come equipped with a cartridge counter like all the other models did and it had no checkering. Also the 99E was never changed over to the tang safety after the one million mark like the rest as well. It still wore it’s lever type safety right up to the day it was discontinued. Now most E’s are in the post million serial range but a few I have seen had been made in 1959 and came with the counter on the side. Some were even seen with Schnabel forearms. These are the guns a lot of 99 lovers buy if they want to have a winter project, the y are cheap guns to find and you don’t feel bad about destroying any collector value by working one over into something you want more. A lot of 99E’s in 308 are bought for rechambering into 358 for instance."

1) you hijacked 222ND's thread
2) you have a Model 99EG.
3) the lever boss code provides the manuf. date
4) that's the deal

1) If I have offended 222ND in some way or broke a forum conduct rule I apologize.
2) I am not a keyboard warrior, spend most of my time outdoors. I have never joined a forum group. I did a search and posted in two threads talking about savage model 99s looking for info. I guess this is frowned upon, I will figure out how to post my own thread.
3) I am not really familiar with the gun. I am looking around on the internet for info. I never heard of a lever boss code before yesterday. So, I don't know the manufacture date based off 20B or 20E.
4) So that's my deal. Thanks for the help.

You are welcome. smile

RMAC, you made a common mistake. When you see the E or F in the circle you mistakenly take that as a model designation. It is not. It's a date code. Starting in 1949 Savage used that stamp to date code the rifles. A=49, B=50, C=51, etc. By in large, they did not put model designations on the rifles. You have to get a book and match rifle characteristics to the model to figure it out, or ask here. You can have what appear to be the exact same rifle, one with checkering and one without, they are two different models. Then when they changed from the Model 1899 to the Model 99, they changed all the letters. In the 20's-30's there was an F that was a take down, in the 50's there was an F that was a solid frame, two totally different rifles. It's quite confusing until you catch on, then it's still confusing, but at least you understand. Hang around, it gets easier as you go, Joe.

A couple of days worth of research and I see there is a lot of info. I might purchase the Collectors guide to the savage 99 rifle by David Royal. Thanks.
