When did the last 1895 leave the factory
Posted By: 99trix Re: 1895 Birth Date - 04/24/18
Fug I have letters from a number of 1895’s. Earliest is 3415 October 1896, 4980 May 1898 6427 September 1898. But these are stock rifles. Just a guess maybe as late as 1904 for a special rifle. The SRC’s modified until 1901, so school us.....

I have #782x but have never lettered it. Anyone have one closer to mine that they have lettered? Thanks .GW

I don't know, but have more questions.

Last to leave the factory according to ledger or legend?

Sounds like Marlin had completed ~5000 rifles by 1898.
Savage had setup in 2 smaller temporary factories in Utica until the main factory was built.
Did Savage continue to "put together" 1895's post Marlin?
Savage may well have had inventory and/or carry over rifles for one reason or another.
Savage may still have one in house!

what SN did they start up out the 1895s with?
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: 1895 Birth Date - 04/24/18
They started at 5000 and when they got up around 8000 + they started numbering them backwards, my carbine is 477x. I don't have the letter available but it left the factory in late 1896 or early 1897. It was one of the 3 that got modified at the new 1899 factory and was shipped mid-1899 to Canada. I bought it from BillR and repatriated it to the US a few years ago. My 1895 Half octagon is serial #516x and was accepted from the factory in early 1896. I haven't heard of any 1895's leaving the factory in 1895. Does anyone have one? I also have a 26" round barrel serial #784x which letters as being shipped late 1896.

The earliest I have is 320X the latest is816X the last one to leave the factory was 606X on April 1909 so say the factory ledger.

Savage would have gotten all spare parts back from Marlin when it finished. Would be interesting to see the gun and see if the barrel is a Marlin barrel, etc.

Thanks, Doug!

Hi new here i just picked up a 1895 was wonder what the value of one on good condition not modified at all might be
Posted By: Southern_WI_Savage Re: 1895 Birth Date - 04/30/18
Welcome aboard hawkeye.

Short answer, depends upon condition as always. And can't really tell that without a few pictures. Could be $500 or could be $2500. ??

Take a minute, start a new thread, review the picture loading thread, takes pics, post pics and that will get you going.

Doug, is there a Marlin production/ship date available? Is it know if it shipped from Savage with an 1895 or 1899 bolt?
