Hey all. It only took me 7 years since I joined the campfire, and my very first post back then was being interested in getting a 99,....I finally got one!!!! Serial number is 3797xx. Caliber is 300 Savage. It has a schnable fore end and no checkering. No tang crack. It is drilled and tapped and has sling swivels installed. Came with a Bushnell 3-9 throwaway scope on it. It is in really nice shape. Bluing looks pretty decent, and the wood has some use marks but nothing serious. It also has the original buttplate. The dealer I got it from said he thinks it a 99R from 1937. Now I know you guys don't like em drilled and tapped and sling swivels installed, but that's how I wanted one. This will be used to hunt with. I think I did ok price wise on it...gave $450 for it plus tax. Also got a free t shirt in the deal. I will try to get pics up tomorrow.
Congrats on getting what you wanted.
That will make an excellent hunting rifle. Congrats on your 1st 99. I don’t have my books with me, but with a schnabel tip forearm with that serial number, it sounds like a model EG; a model R did not have a schnabel tip forearm.
You did good. As Keith said, not an R, R's had the heavier rounded forearm. I've bought a couple nice 99's at estate sales in Dillsburg, That was one of my secret Honey Holes. OOPs secret is out now.
Congrats on your first but, not last Savage 99! Sounds like you got a nice rifle at a good price. The 300 Savage is a fine hunting cartridge.
Now, tell us about the "T" shirt. :-)
T.S.
The name of the gunship is "The Hunter's Trading Post".I have known the owner Jim Adams since I was a little kid. It's actually a stones throw away from Dillsburg in s town called Franklintown. He also is the mayor. This is the 4th or 5th gun I bought from him...and put a handgun on layaway while I was there. Great guy to deal with and does transfers for $20 also.
But back to my rifle. So it's an EG and not an R...doesn't really matter to me as it is pretty much exactly what I have been looking for. Was he about right on mfg. date of 1937? Getting ready to go to church now but will try to get pics later today
It was a noble pursuit, and it culminated in a win. Congratulations on what will be a fine hunting rifle.
It sounds like a prewar EG with no checkering on the forearm. Does it have a non checkered pistol grip (with cap) butt stock?
will someone tell me where i can get the no drill scope mount thanks MOOSE

Mike usually see's anyone asking and sends them a PM. But, just in case he missed this one, send a private message to "Lightfoot".

Non checkered pistol grip. Don't remember off hand if it has a cap...will check when I get home
congrats on getting what you are happy with, now for the hunt for the next one.
Congratulations on your new 99 Can't go wrong with the 300 Savage cartridge either.

I ran out of time to get pics today...will try to get them tomorrow. It does have a black pistol grip cap.I was showing it to my brother in law today and he fell in love with it. I told him not for sale! LOL. Kinda anxious to shoot this thing. I picked up a box of 150 gr. Federal blue box ammo to try in it. He also had Remington Core locts 150 gr and 180 gr. What do you guys normally shoot in yours? I don't reload yet (going to start soon...some of this stuff is gettin expensive to shoot). I also just got my 338 mag model 70 back from the gunsmith so I need to take a range day and have some good old fashioned gun powder therapy!
Thank you! And from your comment earlier, it was no noble quest...I have found a couple over the last few years I wanted. But it was always a deal where I'd see em ata an auction and they would go thru the roof, or at a gunshop or gunshow and they'd be in my ballpark but I would be gun money poor. I wasn't even really looking for one when I came across this one. Went into the gunshop with intentions of buying a cheap handgun. Had a Taurus TCP 380 in my hand ready to ring it up and said to him" before we do this what do you have on the used rifle rack?" and he hands me this. Didn't even have a price on it as he had just gotten it traded in the night before.I asked how much and about fell over when he said $450 and that included the background check. Couldn't get the money outta my wallet fast enough. LOL!
How did you do that? I can't figure it out for the life of me
You have the hard part, just need to put a behind each link to a photo. Remove the spaces from the following line:

Congrats on your purchase. I have to check my serial number. I have a very similar 99 EG with a very similar serial number. Mine was made in 1937. I will check tomorrow when I go back downstairs and open my safe. I think my serial number is 369XXX. My buttstock was cracked and the receiver was drilled and tapped, but the blueing, case coloring, and bore are about perfect. She shoots good, too. I have a Lyman receiver sight on top.
congrats on a realy nice savage 99
You done good
I bet the real joy will be felt when the first meat heads for the freezer
