Hi all, after seeing Fishdog52's moose post, I realized we need a 2018 Savage Kill Page. So I will kick it off, here are a couple pics of Saturday's Wyo Speed Goat hunt, with my grandpa's 1949 vintage 99 EG in 300 Savage. About 125 yds, 1 shot kill using a Redfield 70LH peep and a Lyman gold bead front. Looking forward to seeing more 2018 harvest pics! Many thanks to deerstalker for helping me post the images.

Well, it's a little different over here in dark Oregon timber, but ok, it worked for antelope out on the sunny plains.

Can't we all just get along? I have a dream!

Dark Oregon timber, such that you can't use sights? Heaven forbid! Mayhaps it's time to move.

Here's what it looks like thru a peep sight-

Apologies to the OP. I tend to get off track. Nice job hunting that goat handicapped with a peep sight! I couldn't have done it!

Whoops, I did it again.

We ought to organize a Savage Forum antelope hunt sometime. 99's only (and M1920's and Super Sporters, I guess), iron sights only like Northwesthunter did. (Roy can use a scope, because, well, he's old).

Can we get a group discount for, say, ten guys? ("On the count of three we all shoot.")
Posted By: saddlering Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 10/04/18
How many can we fit in your Saub No Chainsaws tho!
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 10/04/18
Antelopes or cranky old Savage guys? Probably six of the former and two of the latter. We might need Joe's chain saw to make them fit in the Saab.
Posted By: wyo1895 Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 10/04/18
Antelope season lasts to Halloween. If there are any area 87 licences left you guys can come here. Otherwise apply for them for the 2019 season. I can get three elk in the back of my Dodge 2500 so probably about 6 or 8 goats. But you can't take it back to Maryland. David
Posted By: gunswizard Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 10/04/18
Opened this thread expecting to see several of this years Savage kills. All there is the OP's antelope hunt pic, all the rest is hot air from the usual windbags. Topic drift as usual, oh well.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 10/04/18
You know what gunwhizz, go away and come back when there's more hunting activity. Those of us back East won't be getting into the deer woods for another month or two, so be patient. I'm sure there will be lots of dead stuff for your viewing enjoyment in due time. Meanwhile, so what if the thread goes astray for a bit. It's all in good fun- something you so seldom seem capable of!

And lighten up while you're at it. You can be a (humorless) windbag yourself, dontcha know!!!

Where's your kill? I must have missed it.

Really have enjoyed your contribution to the thread tho, carry on.

I'll bring the 38-55 and if we play our cards right, we'll line em up and fill multiple tags with every shot!

Thanks guys! I usually use a .308 or 7x57 for moose but I got this savage earlier this fall for 100$ and just had an urge to fill the freezer with it. (we don't have a freezer, we hang till winter and then thaw and butcher. This guy was frozen solid about 4 days after I got it) This is an average/small moose for around here; body and antlers. Exceptional eating! Called it in to the cabin; showed up late in the evening it was dark. So I called in the morning he came in again. I was in my pajamas smile I know this is controversial but I have been taken the past few years by the neck shot. If I am close, like under 100 yds, and the situation is good, like lots of opportunity for a follow up shot, (and you're a good shot and know your anatomy) the neck shot at the base of the skull is quite spectacular. I won't recommend it but this is how this guy went down.

Happy hunting!

I've shot many bucks over the years. Late this afternoon I accomplished my goal of taking a buck with bullets which I cast myself. I started casting this summer. Took this 6-pointer at 100 yards with my 1920 .303 Savage. I took a quick cellphone pick where he dropped after going about 30 yards. My brother-in-law took the pic with me in it after we got him out and back to the house. Headed to the shack to celebrate.

Where leaving Friday for WV opener next Monday. One of my neighbors farms is going up for sale, so I guess we will hike up to the top of the mountain and take a look. I'd love to buy it, but I don't have the funds for 160 acres. Good luck to every one.

Took a little walk this evening. Old faithful went along. 1957 99f in 300 topped with that Leupold M8 6x and of course 180 grain silvertip ammo. This gun loves it but deer don't. 60 yard shot, 70 yard track job and I had him.

.300 which is a round I am quickly becoming very fond of. I purchased a 99R from Fireball a couple of years back and gifted it to my father. He immediately went on a killing spree with it shooting several whitetails and hogs and the performance is great with very little recoil. I had been looking for a decent hunter grade F for a while and finally found one here from TomT. I'm really liking it. Hope to post more pictures on this thread before the deer season ends.

That spotted boar was a pretty handsome swine as far as Feral hogs go. If you know how destructive they are and the fact they are a non-native species you understand why we kill every one we can. We cant even begin to put a dent in the population. I truly love hunting them but hate what they do to the native wildlife and the landowners who's property they tear up.

Yes sir it is and it is crazy accurate as well! With that tang safety it is made for a southpaw like my dad. He loves it. He has hunted it hard but he babies it and it looks just like it did when you shipped it with the exception of the old Weaver 4X that he mounted on it.
Posted By: Fireball2 Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 11/12/18
that's the only 99 I ever had with the aftermarket tang safety added. What a fantastic piece of machinery.

Decided yesterday to start thinning out the does at the farm. Took a large doe with a 1935 99 RS 300 mounted with a 1938 Zeiss scope this am. Fifty yard shot with 1950's Winchester silver tip ammo. Donated it to a individual that needed the meat for the winter. Will take others, all with different Savage 99's. Mostly with pre 1940's rifles. Sorry no pictures, hard to brag about tender eating does. GW
I haven't had a chance to check this post since I started it - all I have to say is AWESOME so far. Yukon moose with a 303, verifying all the old 303 ads - I love it. What was the load for that kill shot? I have head shot several cow elk at close range in the timber, took a cow buffalo with a 500 gr 45-70 blackpowder load out of an 1888 trapdoor right behind the ear, and dropped a nice 6x6 bull by spining him as he fed directly to me with his head down, so I know what you mean about the solid neck shot - instantaneous. I am also envious of those who get to shoot lots of pigs and whitetails every year - seems like a place where the 99 would shine. Keep 'em coming! I head out Friday for one more run at big bull elk for a 4 day hunt, we'll see if there is anything to report.

Yes sir I clean and quarter all I shoot. They are very edible. Just like pork you get at the grocery store except much leaner. At my house we call it Organic Free Range Pork. It is funny, the same people that would turn their nose up if I told them it was feral hog rave about how great it is. I just keep my mouth shut and keep cooking.

This upstate NY 8-pt's ticket was punched by my B-I-L Joe and his 99 x 7mm-08 on Sunday evening, at 150+ yards across a ravine, he waited more than an hour for this buck to stand up and stretch his legs. It's was a smart old-timer, maybe 6+ years, that's been watching us run around the woods after him for a long time. (crumby picture, but great deer and and rifle combo, worth sharing).

It's special for me because the rifle was a gift for a guy who "never had much use for 99s",... until one showed up in his favorite caliber!

Got to WV camp just after dark Friday, first time it's snowed before deer opener in 47 years. Took several runs to get up the hill. The snow was melting and we had rivers running down the ruts we call a driveway. Didnt see any deer at camp for 2 days, till 99guy showed up for sight in. While "shootin" the breeze, a nice 8 pointer walked across the field in front of the trailer. Got settled in my stand a few minutes befoe 7 Monday morning. At 7:10 a shot went off so close it scared the jeebers out of me. At 7:15 there was another shot, so I figured the neighbor got that nice 8. At 7:26 I saw that rack slowly bobbing above the hay, walking straight at me. I could see he was limping on one rear leg. At about 60 yards I put the peep of the 22HP right under his chin, on his neck. Bang flop! The neighbor had hit him in the right rear knee. The neighbor showed up an hour or so later and asked if he could see where he hit him? He had 4 pieces of bone he found in the snow where he hit it. He shook hands, took some pics, and congratulated me for being a better shot. I'm having trouble with my photo host and can't post pics. If I can't get it fixed I'll send them to someone to post them for me.

Posted By: Calhoun Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 11/21/18
Nice shooting! Glad the neighbor was good about it, guy who puts it on the ground for good is the one who should get the deer.
Posted By: JoeMartin Re: 2018 Savage Kill Page - 11/21/18
Thanks John, that shot was for you. I used the peep because he was so close and some of my friends were teasing me that I didn't know how to use irons. Thanks Rory, I was glad he didn't want to argue also. It really wasn't close, he never would have caught up with it. It was a wound the deer would have survived. The first thing he said was he knew it wasn't a fatal wound. He took some pics with the deer to show his guys what he missed. A few years ago I let one of his guys keep a small scraggly 8 that I chest shot. Found pieces of lung hanging on the fence where it rubbed trying to jump over. The young guy said the deer was standing still, wobbling, when he shot. Then he said something funny. He said, I know you killed him, but I put him down, can I keep him. I already had a bigger 4 point, so I said sure, keep him.

This gives me 3 parts of the slam. All I need is one with a 303, leaning towards the 1899B. I'm hunting the MD opener, but it's shotgun only where we are. Then I'm getting my knee replaced. We have a late buck season in January, in my county, which is a rifle county. So, I'm hoping I'll be able to get out for that. If not, next year.

Did you hold right on him Joe or make a "Kentucky Windage" adjustment based on how it shot Saturday?

You can hunt a long time in WV before you see another buck that big. That is about as big a WV mountain buck as you will see.

I put the bead right on the side of his neck, under his chin, looking at me, so about 2" to the left of point of impact, yes Kentucky Windage.

This fella showed up ten minutes after I got in the stand. The 99F fits me just right and the 300 savage worked as advertised.
I had mostly spikes on camera so was very happy with this one. Then my hunting buddy with a Winchester 88 shoots an even bigger one out of the same stand the next morning. Maybe they are attracted to lever actions.

If I am close, like under 100 yds, and the situation is good, like lots of opportunity for a follow up shot, (and you're a good shot and know your anatomy) the neck shot at the base of the skull is quite spectacular. I won't recommend it but this is how this guy went down.

Happy hunting!

I have to ask, is that a hunting cabin or your residence? You on satellite internet?
