I hastily turned to the article on the .250-3000 in my copy of the American Rifleman which arrived today. Oh boy I thought, finally an article right down my alley. Three paragraphs in I started shaking my head. Author John Haviland baldly stated that the .250 was introduced by Savage in 1913 in the Models 1899A, CD, and H. Oh well. I guess he didn't know we stand by ready to help writers with their fact checking...

He gave kudos to his EG .250 and bragged about his .250 bolt guns, while providing some useful load data for both. He never touched upon 87 grain Speers but mentioned 87 Sierras and 85 Noslers grouping into an inch out of 1:14 twists, as well as 100 grain Ballistic Tips (which raised my eyebrows). Anybody else here have pleasurable experiences with those three bullets out of an old Savage slow twist barrel?

All in all a well written article, for the most part.

Sounds like a poor attempt at journalism, if you consider facts important.

The 100gr Ballistic tip is going to shoot groups of about 6" at 100 yards with most old 250-3000's, if they don't hit the paper going sideways. And I don't remember the last time I saw 85gr Noslers for sale in .257... Well, darn. They do list an 85gr Varmint and 90gr Ballistic Tip. Wonder if the 90gr is what John meant? Only 100gr on their web site is Partition and E-Tip (Lead Free).

Friend told me about the article, but I didn't renew last year after NRA waffled on bump stocks. So haven't seen it.

And yes, I already sent a letter to the editor pointing out the gaff.

Oh Great, more fake news! I got mine in the mail today, have not read it yet.I did read the part that said something like "the 250 gives up next to nothing over the 243 or 6.5 Creedmore. That I think he got right!

A few years ago, I picked up a Nosler loading book and turned to the 250-3000 Savage section. First and foremost they stated that Nosler doesn't make a projectile for the .257 short enough to shoot well in a Savage 99 with the 1-14 twist..... They were correct in this assertion. Some 99s may have anywhere from a 1-13 to a 1-15 twist, depending who set up the machines for that day. Mine happens to be bout 1-13.5, but the 100 grain spritzers usually (any brand) double my groups in size.

100 grain Remington factory loads shoot great in my EG and my 1920. That has been my only experience with 100 grain bullets in 250-3000.

I thought the 250-3000 debuted in the 250-3000 1899. Am i wrong?

Greg, you are right. And the first of those were sold in 1914. The 250-3000 wasn’t offered in another catalogued model until 1921.

Please let us know if you get a response.

I doubt they respond individually. We'll know if a retraction appears on the letters to the editor page next month.

Well then buy your wife a membership and get one of the two other magazines.

...or sign up the boys as life members. $600 (= 20 yrs at annul cost). My dad bought mine when I was a kid and I did the same for my son. The gun ranges I've belonged to have required NRA membership, also. The NRA is a big provider of gun range insurance.

This is even better at $550 for a Jr. Life:

The internet has killed several things I once held dear. Music and gunwriters are among these.

My, my, my; what an arrogant prick!

I wouldn't want to be a gunwriter. Can you imagine the dickweeds (not the case here) you'd have to put up with? Talk about asking for it.

I think this last gun show gave me a bad attitude. I'm tired of smelling guys that are carrying around trouser loaves or pissed themselves and never bath. I'm now pretty completely convinced a certain percentage of gun guys are squarely in the retarded camp.

Roy, you need to spend 3 days behind a table in Bonners Ferry. first are the guys that started smoking as teen agers and are now in their 60 and have never brushed their tooth!
then the Garlic eaters! i would have to go into the bathroom by the urinals to get fresh air cry
then the " i coulda bought that rifle 40 years ago for......" yup ya coulda.
then the guy that bought a 45 acp off me. called later saying i owed him a couch and living room window cause he loaded it and couldn't figure out the safety so he pulled the trigger. claimed it was loaded when i sold it to him, even though it had a zip tie through the action.
i haven't had a table in three years.
