Hello.

I have been monkeying around with the 375. Sorry I only got Marlins.

Anyways I got 33 grains of TAC and a cci 250 primer and a 300 grain Hornady interlock to fit at 2.569 inches crimped and groups great.

It should have a muzzle velocity of about 1650 to 1750 fps.

My question, will a cast lead bullet expand better or worse than a jacketed bullet at these slower speeds?

The guy on the phone told me 34 grains max load for the 38/55 of TAC. But on the email he sent it was listed as under 33 grains for max load. Can you shoot 375 brass out of a 38/55 without causing throat erosion?

Has anyone used exterminator powder?

Thanks.

I'd say it depends on what bullet, alloy hardness, meplat width, etc. I have not fired the Hornady Interlocks, but I did test Vollmer's 255 grain jacketed out of my contender; it expanded nicely at a chrono vel of 1572 fps. Found the bullet in the 5th water jug, it weighed 239grains and expanded to 0.7".

Hey, Marlins got respect here. If I wasn’t a Savage nut job I’d probably be a Marlin nut job. On that note I’ll end by saying that there are some very knowledgeable folks here who can address your question much better than I.

What Keith said. I would add that all things being equal, at that velocity I would put my money on a cast bullet- if it had a wide meplat (large flat point) and was cast of a rather soft alloy say in the bhn hardness range of 10-13. Folks have forgotten (or don't care to know) just how "splattery" a soft cast bullet can be. Such a load would be an impressive deer thumper.

Marlin? Are we talking about the guy from Mutual of Omahas Wild Kingdom or the car? grin

Hey Angus, a 300 grain slug in a 375 Winchester? I would personally shoot a 200 Sierra for thin skinned American game. Any reason you're thinking 300? Marlin guys usually have a 45-70 in the stable for 300's. Just curious.

I gotta about a box and a half of factory 250 Big Bore ammo if you'd like to try that for sheits and giggles. I ain't gunna shoot it.

I will take the big bore ammo please.

Years ago I lost a mule deer to a 140 grain 8 mm bullet out of a 8 x 57.

It was a quartering away shot I entered the Rumen ( left side).

Ever since that day I like heavy sectional density and try to abide by at least a 2.5 S.D. On non monolithic bullets.

I plan on using the 375 for short range, perhaps elk. And perhaps miss Melanie will be the shooter. Me think the 45/70 would be a no go

She is not that big on recoil.

On a side note the guy at western powder said their is no reloading difference between cast bullet and jacketed?

I wonder why Lyman reloading lists them separately?

It was also suggested I should use " gas checks" if the Marvelous Marlins are also Micro groovy?

Wonder why Savage went Tango wango safety........but didn't become Microgroovy?
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: 375 Winchester question. - 02/02/19
Micro groove barrel? Best stick with jacketed stuff then. Those buggers are hard to make work with cast bullets, usually needing to make the alloy harder. 'Tis the major reason I have shunned many Marlins. (Why you may ask do they work so well with lead .22 bullets? Because of velocity- micro groove rifling is very shallow and a soft .22RF bullet is going slow enough so as not to strip through it. Jack the velocity up and a soft lead bullet kind of wants to skate through without being gripped by the rifling, hence the need for harder alloys or jacketed bullets.)

I bet that 140 grain 8mm bullet failed more because of either design issues or defectiveness rather than the fact it was a middling weight 8mm bullet.

Thanks for the advice gnoahhh.

It is exactly why I am trying to do what I am doing. The 375 38 / 55 is wrought with cast bullet conundrum.

And you are most likely correct about my failure to harvest that deer............but.....fool me once shame on you....u know the rest!

It is my story and I am sticking 2 it!

Thanks buddy!

We are heading your way soon!

I've still got a full box of the original Winchester Big-Bore 250gr ammo that the guy gave me when I bought my Win 94 BB off him. Last I looked they were listing for around $150 on GunBroker. Dunno if any were selling at those prices, but I knew I wasn't gonna be a buyer.

I do wish Barnes would make their 255gr Original Flat Nose a little more available so maybe I could actually find a few boxes in stock some time to try out. I've got the 200gr Sierra's moving down the barrel at 2,175fps with 37.8 grains of Reloader 7 and it groups right around an inch and a quarter at 100 yards which is plenty good for Ohio whitetail.

Note my response above reference the Vollmer 255 jacketed bullet.

Also, looks like those Barnse 255 may be in stock here: https://precisionreloading.com/cart.php#!l=BN&i=30497

Keith I got the 300 grain Hornady bullets grouping nicely!

How does one do a jug test?

Where does one buy vollmer bullets?

The 375 in the marlin action is a pure joy to shoot!

I absolutely love it.

i am packing a 336 off to JES for a rebore to 375 monday. i realized i had 4 30-30's and only one 375 (94 BB) so instead of trying to find a super costly one i will have this one bored. only question i haven't settled is 3 groove or 5 groove. anybody have input?
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: 375 Winchester question. - 02/03/19
Why are you going for a 375 instead of 38/55?

Is it because you already own a 375?
yes . i am just wanting a 375 so i won't have to add another something to remember. getting harder every year . plus i have close to 500 375 brass with about the same in bullets.

I just filled 7 1-gallon milk jugs with water, lineed em up on top an 8ft 2x6 across two cememt blocks and fire from about 20 yards

I"m pretty sure my Marlin Model 375 has five micro grooves. I'd ask JES what he thinks; he's done these before and is very knowledgeable.

Marlin 375 group would be a good place to ask, too. https://www.marlinowners.com/forum/team-375-team-38-55

Does the 336 receiver have the same pressure rating as the Model 375? Was wondering if you will be able to fire max .375 Win loads in it?
Posted By: Angus1895 Re: 375 Winchester question. - 02/04/19
The 38/55 is longer also, so may not fit in the rotor.

The marlin 375 is micro grooved.

What are the thoughts on the 375 in a 20" brl. with factory 200 gr?

Rick, quite a few folks use the Sierra 200 bullet in the .375Win ( the only big commercial company bullet produced now for 375 win). A couple small co. Make 220 and 255 jacketed now, too (Hawk and Vollmer). Both the Big Bore and Marlin Model 375 are 20”. I have not read any complaints about that bullet. can easily get 2200+FPS, some load data with Aa1680 is over 2400fps. RL7 seems to be the favorite powder.

Ralph was asking about cutting the brl back to 20" on a 99-A. I had forgot about Win and Marlin being 20" from the get-go. Other than losing a few FPS and adding a little extra flame I didn't see a problem. Actually, I guess the 375 was probably designed around a 20" brl.

You lose very little velocity on the larger bore diameter cartridges. My .375 is 18" and I don't notice any flames.

Thanks, I'll pass it on.
