My 1956 Savage Model 99 has a oval or “0” mark on the left side of the action directly below where it says Savage Model 99. I’ve always wondered what it signifies. Haven’t found anything in the web to illuminate. Any thoughts?
Yep. Each inspector had a different stamp, and at certain stages of production/assembly they would stamp the receiver or wood to verify it passed inspection.
Always thought that was an odd place to stamp it, but they did it for decades.
