I've long had an interest in the Savage model 340 and all it's variations but I haven't been able to find out much about it's history, such as number made by caliber, 340's sold under another name, etc. Does anyone know of a book or website with information on the 340?

It would appear the path is open for you to pursue it. Fame and fortune awaits!

I have my Pap's 340D in .222. It was his favorite rifle and its is a shooter.
Don't know of a book off hand, but, plenty of info & resources are available.

Thanks for the links! Looks not much mention in books or as the main subject

It was a utility gun, lots of folks grab a couple but it's not ever had a lot of collector interest. Southern_WI_Savage's resources and other online places will probably be your best bet. Any book covering it wouldn't be a best seller.

I think I've got a 30-30, 22 Hornet, 222 and 223 now in the 340 family.

i have been a sucker for the 340 for just about as long as there has been a 340.
mainly because i was always too poor to buy a 110.
have had many in all clothing but mainly in 222 or 30-30, with a few 22 hornets passing through.
in my 30's i had a 30-30 in 340D that kicked me so hard it would give me a nose bleed. finally traded it off for a Lyman tumbler. slugged the bore before i got rid of it and it was .302. go figger!
