a Friend sent me a couple of photos
The second on the motor bike looks like a model 1920 but could be wrong
enjoy
Early 250-3000 in the first, and it looks like a 1920 in the 2nd to me as well. Great photos!
Hate to think what the bike would be worth on today's market
a bit more than the rifle I think

Especially in that condition! Great photos!
Thx for posting some of "my favourite things!" Indian motorcycles, Savage Gs and M1920s.
Looks like the fellow in the first pic wrastled a bit with the cat ,,Neat pics
Yes he does appear to have a few lacerations on his leg that his attendant is cleaning
No need for an emergency room; have your buddy sew it up with a harness needle and horse tail hair for thread. Pour some home-made liquor on it and go back to work.
I love them old pictures. They make me think twice about tough and little bullets for dangerous game (even with thin skin). Thanks for posting them. I will dream of Africa!
I was hoping he shot it with a 22 HP. Love that Indian. I owned a 48 Chief for 25 years.
Top Photo is Charles Cottar. You may remember him from the Savage Lion and Gorilla ads.
Leopard "scratches" killed or maimed many a hunter back in the "good old days" before antibiotics. Apparently they aren't exactly fastidious about cleaning their fingernails after feeding off a carcass that they have hung up in a tree to "ripen" for a few hot days....
If you want a fairly realistic image of the threat leopards pose to hunters, there's a decent episode in the old BBC TV series "The Flame Trees of Thika." Terrifying. Makes me want to take my Savage/Valmet 12 guage double to bed with me at night!
REALLY GREAT pix--Thanks!
Just looked that name up Cottar .....They are still in Business .....Formed in 1919-1920 ....Chas was thrashed by 3 leopards in his lifetime ,Had encounters with lions and elephants ,,,,Tuff cuss Made it to 1940 and gored by a Rhino
Sounds like he had a death wish
Is the old photo inverted? Drive train on wrong side?
This bike looks like from similar time period. It's at the Indy Museum in Speedway, IN.
Bolt is on the correct side of the gun...
What kind of antelope looking critter by the Indian?
Great pics!
The leopard hunter's partner must have washed his drawers first and hung em on the line.
Indian photo shows Logo correctly so not inverted.
I Tried Flipping the photo just in case the Negative had been Flipped
But its all wrong Left handed action and logo backwards
So the drive train on that Indian model was on the opposite side
Interesting

Gazelle...?

The shift lever is on the right side of both bikes. You can see the black shift knob sticking up by the tank on the red one.
Indian Scout 600?

Great read about Cotter!!!
I believe another site yes Gazelle ..Tommie Gazelle ...But it also said he was shooting a winchester ..posted by a visitor
Early indian scout,vs indian power plus chief. early scout has no rear suspension, where the chief had semi eliptacal leaf spring rear suspension. i really like the way the shooter is hunkering down on the bike to get his shot. I used to have a bunch of indian bikes in the 60's and 70's. Don
Bawana Cotter is said to have killed two leapords at one time by hand. Couldn't do a buff that way though.
