Was given a box of these with 150 gr SST bullet. Do these work well in an 99? Seem to be rather warm load, but I assume safe since it's factory ammo. Does anyone have a favorite load for the 300 Savage with 150 gr bullet? That will be my bullet of choice for the 99 since I load my Krag and 30-06 with 180's

I have used them in a few 99s and they worked well. There my go to ammo when i take a 300 deer hunting.

Yup, they work fine in my 99s, too. I handload ammo for my 99s using Leverevolution powder and get similar velocities.

Thanks for the replies. Mr Royal likes 4895, What other powders does everyone find useful? Don't mind adding another powder but I already have 3031, 4350, and Hunter. Just trying yo keep it simple.

CFE-223, 4064, and RL-15 are the ones I've used with satisfaction. (CFE-223 definitely lessens copper fouling to boot.) But heck, any fast-to-medium burning powder will probably work just dandy, and the slow ones too but with lessened velocity because the .300 case only holds just so much powder.

I use Varget in my 250-3000, 300 Sav, 303 Sav with ear to ear grinnin results. Use RL15 in 300 Sav with 165 gr Nosler Partitions. Thinkin bout giving the Superformance a go, but haven't had the time yet.

I use a lot of Varget in other cartridges, just never got around to it in the Savage cartridges. I really should.

Anybody here use TAC? I have a can of it staring at me but haven't tried any yet.

Gonna be burning a bunch of Li'l Gun in the near future. A 1935 Winchester 54 .22 K Hornet came to roost. I'll probably waste time with it and neglect deer loads.

38.5 grains of IMR3031 with a 150 is accurate in many rifles in 300 Sav.

Thanks 300jimmy, I'll be looking at that load as I use 3031 in my 45-70. Gnoahhh, I use Li'l Gun in my Hornet, it's about the best powder for that cartridge that I've used. Something you might try when you work up loads for your K Hornet is a Lee factory crimp die. It's an extra step in the process but really helped my rifle.

Think I first learned about it in one of Mr Barsness's books. The thought is the thin hornet brass gives inconsistent bullet pull and that could be correct. In my rifle my groups were always pretty good but not consistent, now they are almost always under 1 inch.

My 300 Savage does well with 40 gr of TAC or 41 gr of Varget under a 150 gr Partition. I ended up using Varget as I have a good supply of the stuff.
I have acquired an early 50's 99 that will be a Christmas present for a grandson. Came topped with an old Weaver 4x in a tipoff mount. Took it to the range to see how it performs. At 50 yards, shot 4 groups getting to proper zero. In all 4 groups, bullets were touching. Guessing this will be a good combination for the kid.

Ken Waters recommended either 40 grains of IMR 4064 or 40 grains of IMR 4895 with a 150 grain bullet. Another good load is 42 grains of WW-748 with a 150. for the 180s, he liked 44 grains of WW-760. I like 41 grains of WW-748 with a 180 grain round nose. Both of these loads produce about 2,400 fps in a 22" barrel.

I broke down one of those Superformance loads and found 44.5 grains of a powder that looks like Leverevolution or CFE-223. Those Superformance loads exhibit no pressure problems in my 99s. My 99F with 22" barrel gave me 2,640 fps. In my 99E with 20" barrel I got 2,600 fps. Velocities in that carbine barrel are always low.

I load Leverevolution powder in my 250-3,000 with 87 or 90 grain bullets. 37.5 grains gives me about 3,000 fps. On Tuesday I shot 8 of those 90 grain loads into about 2" at 100 yards. That was with a cheap Bushnell scope and 73 year old eyes. Surprisingly, that 99F doesn't walk its shots with a warm barrel. I can't say as much for the 99s in 300 Savage caliber. However, you can't shoot more than one or maybe two shots at a deer in the Catskills. Both 99Fs are going to the range tomorrow. Again.
